Synopsis
The son of a wealthy Greek immigrant, Nick Stratton (Anthony Franciosa) is attempting to find his own way in the world after returning home to San Francisco following a stint in the Army. His father Pete (Ernest Borgnine) is a self-made millionaire and important in the Greek immigrant community. Pete loves his son but he tries to buy his love and dominate his life like he does his employees and business associates. Nick struggles to assert his own identity but the family pressure and his love for his Father are very strong. Pete wants Nick to marry a nice Greek girl, the daughter of a business associate, but Nick falls in love with Guilietta Cameron (Gina Lollobrigida). He takes her as his date to his parents' wedding anniversary full of members of the Greek immigrant community. Pete reveals to him in no uncertain terms that Guilietta is a prostitute, whose services Pete and many of his friends, who are present at the party, have purchased.Actors

The late nineteenth century: Count d'Origo, a notorious roué, spots an attractive woman. Hoping to seduce her, he attempts to find out who she is. In fact she is Geraldine, a practiced courtesan. However, the local mayor tells the Count that she is Ottavia, the wife of his nephew, Enrico, a struggling young musician. Enrico is hoping to stage his newly completed opera. With the Count's support he will get the backing he needs. His uncle hopes to help Enrico by employing Geraldine to impersonate Ottavia, so she can be "seduced". Before she submits, Geraldine will extract a promise from the Count to stage her "husband"'s opera. Geraldine, Ottavia and Enrico agree to go along with the plot. However, as Enrico introduces Geraldine to the eager Count he becomes increasingly jealous as the Count moves in. Eventually he forces the Count to leave after becoming angered by his advances. Charmed by his protectiveness, Geraldine asks him to pretend she is really his wife for one night, so that she can live her dream of having a normal life with a devoted husband.

As the yearly vacation of six neighbors, the Gilberts, Masons, and Weavers, approaches, Kitty Weaver (Lucille Ball) and Larry Gilbert (Bob Hope) find themselves frustrated with the routine. "Doc" Delaney (Burt Lancaster) is a recovering alcoholic who, in his younger days, was a promising medical student who dropped out of school to take a job to support a pregnant Lola, whose premarital intercourse with Doc caused her to be thrown out of her family's house by her father. Doc, thinking he was doing the right thing, married Lola (Shirley Booth). The child later died, and in the process rendered Lola unable to have any further children, leaving the couple childless. As a result, Doc turned to drinking excessively, causing him to have bouts of anger and murderous rage, and later drinking away a sizeable inheritance from his parents. He eventually joined Alcoholics Anonymous and was able to quit drinking, though he still keeps a bottle in the house to remind him of his past life.
