Add to a movie listGoing Blind is a feature-length documentary about vision loss in the United States. Directed by Joseph Lovett, produced by Joseph Lovett and Hilary Klotz Steinman and edited by Jason Szabo and Jamie Hogan. Going Blind premiered at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Berlin in June 2010 and opened in New York at the Quad Cinema in October 2010.
The film interweaves Lovett's struggle to keep his glaucoma at bay with the stories of six people he meets who are dealing with different levels of sight loss. The film shows that losing vision is not death but a different perspective and shows how much is available in terms of vision enhancement techniques, low vision therapy such as at Lighthouse International, and new technology to keep people with sight loss engaged in their lives.
Going Blind is in educational distribution. An evaluation report of the film's effectiveness and an outreach toolkit on how organizations can best use the film can be downloaded from the homepage of the website as well. Going Blind is also available for streaming and downloading at Amazon.com.
The film has been financed through grants from The Readers Digest Partners for Sight Foundation, Pfizer Ophthalmics, The National Institutes of Health and others.
The film was released to limited theatres on October 8, 2010.

Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason, but his wounds render him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond, of sorts, with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight.

Bruce Pritchard (Malcolm McDowell) is a 24-year-old working-class man and amateur soccer player with a passion for life. All this changes when he suddenly finds himself struck down by an incurable degenerative disease and confined for the rest of his life to a wheelchair. The documentary begins by showcasing a process by which a wall, 5 feet (1.5 m) high by 60 feet (18 m) wide, of a newly developed building in Santiniketan would be decorated by 20 murals designed by Benode Behari Mukherjee. While the narrator (Satyajit Ray) describes Mukherjee's family, Mukherjee himself explains the process of mural making and how he spends most of his time alone in Santiniketan with his favourite drink, tea. Mukherjee, the youngest child of his family among six children, is shown spending his initial days as a student in Santiniketan with his drawings and paintings. He was a student of Nandalal Bose, another acclaimed painter from Santiniketan. The film mentions Bose's influence of Mukherjee's initial work with his own "striking" originality.

Franco Arnò (Karl Malden) a middle-aged blind man is walking down a street at night with his niece Lori (Cinzia De Carolis) when they pass by a man in a car. Franco overhears him mention blackmail. They walk back to Franco's apartment nearby and while Lori sleeps, Franco works on a puzzle when he hears a noise. Outside, the unseen man in the parked car gets out and knocks out a night watchman by the gate of a large medical complex, the Terzi Institute. The movie is a lesson on how to live life, taking up the lives of Hari (Sanjeev Kumar) and Aarthi (Jaya Bhaduri) who are deaf and mute. All they have to help them is their hope, confidence and some kindness in the society along with Uncle Narayan who is blind. Tragedy strikes their lives as well when they lose their first child thanks to Kanu's greed. But they never give up hope on life and not in one instance during the entire movie do they think about ending it. They live life, fight it and succeed in it at a bigger scale than any normal person.
