Green Fish (Hangul: 초록 물고기; RR: Chorok Mulgogi) is a 1997 South Korean film. It was the first feature-length film directed by Lee Chang-dong, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Lee had previously been known as a novelist and high school teacher. The film stars Han Suk-kyu in one of his first major film roles. It was the eighth highest-attended South Korean film of 1997.

Synopsis

Having just been discharged from the military, Mak-dong is on the train home. As he leans out the train platform, Mi-ae, a beautiful woman in the car ahead of him, is also leaning out. Her pink scarf escapes from her and poignantly lands on Mak-dong's face, blinding him. As he goes back into the train car to return the scarf, he becomes embroiled in a fight with a group of thugs who are harassing Mi-ae. From the beginning, Mak-dong is entangled in a relationship that becomes his undoing.

Lee Shin-ae (Jeon Do-yeon) and her only child move to the small town of Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province. Her husband has recently died and she has decided to start life anew back in the hometown of her deceased husband. While entering Miryang, Shin-ae's car breaks down along a rural highway. She is able to get the local mechanic in Miryang named Kim Jong-chan (Song Kang-ho) to come out to her car and start it once again. Although they come from different social backgrounds, the pair hits it off and seems to find comfort in each other's presence.

Jongsu, un jeune homme emprunté et plutôt introverti, travaille à Séoul comme livreur à mi-temps. Au cours d'une livraison, il croise sans la reconnaître Haemi, une ancienne voisine et camarade de classe, devenue animatrice d'événements commerciaux à Séoul. Elle l'identifie (ils sont originaires du même patelin : Paju, non loin de Séoul) et à son initiative, ils refont rapidement connaissance. Il a fini ses études, fait son service militaire et veut devenir écrivain ; elle apprend la pantomime et veut devenir actrice. Ils se revoient et bientôt couchent ensemble dans le petit studio où elle vit avec son chat. Presque immédiatement après, elle informe Jongsu qu'elle s'apprête à partir en voyage en Afrique noire et lui demande de bien vouloir nourrir son chat en son absence.

Upon his release from prison, Hong Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu) goes looking for his relatives in Seoul. His brothers have moved and neither they and nor their mother are aware Jong-du is back on the streets after serving a three-year prison term for a hit-and-run accident.
