Haze (HAZE ヘイズ) is a 2005 Japanese thriller/horror film written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto who also stars in the movie. After appearances at several international festivals in 2005, the film debuted theatrically in Japan on March 4, 2006. Two versions of the film exist: the original release, a short 25 minute version; and what Director Tsukamoto entitled the "Long Version", which runs 49 minutes.

Synopsis

Un homme se réveille, enfermé dans sorte de labyrinthe souterrain, tellement exigu, qu'il peut à peine s'y déplacer. Il ne se souvient ni d’où il vient ni comment il est arrivé dans cet enfer. À l'abdomen, il a une blessure profonde et douloureuse. Il commence à se déplacer dans les confins étroits de ce labyrinthe, en tentant de survivre aux pièges mortels omniprésents. Il doit parfois se déplacer à la force de ses dents...

The film opens with a man (called only "the man", or the "Metal Fetishist"), cutting open a massive gash in his leg and then shoving a large threaded steel rod into the wound. Later, upon seeing maggots festering in the wound, he screams, runs out into the street, and is hit by a car. The driver of the car, a Japanese businessman (Tomorowo Taguchi), and his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara) try to cover up the mess by dumping the body into a ravine, but the dumped man gets revenge by forcing the businessman's body to gradually metamorphose into a walking pile of scrap metal. This process starts when the driver finds a piece of metal stuck in his cheek while shaving. He tries to remove it, but realizes it is growing from the inside.

Anthony is a man with an American father and a deceased Japanese mother living and working in Tokyo. One day his son is run over and killed by Yatsu, this film's version of "The Metal Fetishist". Shortly afterward Anthony begins to transform into metal. He discovers that the work of his scientist father may be the key to his transformation. In his father's house he discovers a secret room with files and papers detailing the Tetsuo Project as a way to turn people into androids. He also learns that his father met his mother while they each researched the project. Anthony's wife arrives but before she sees her transformed husband a S.W.A.T. team arrives and she is taken hostage. Anthony's transformation finishes its hold and he defeats the S.W.A.T. team with bullets fired from his body, but refrains from killing them. The severely injured team is extracted, but then killed by Yatsu.

The film tells about a Japanese door-to-door insurance salesman, Tsuda Yoshiharu, who takes up boxing after some chance meetings with a former high school friend, Kojima Yakuji. Reijiro Hieda, a young and energetic archeologist, has been discredited since advocating heretical theories. A letter from his brother-in-law Yabe, a junior high school teacher, tells of his discovery of an ancient tomb built to appease evil spirits. Hieda eagerly goes to investigate, only to find that Yabe has mysteriously disappeared along with one of his students, Reiko Tsukishima. Meanwhile, Yabe's son, Masao, searches for his father in the school during summer vacation and encounters Reiko. Masao becomes engulfed in a mysterious atmosphere, and strange creatures appear, upon which his back begins to ache and emit smoke. Hieda appears and saves Masao. Together they search the premises and find a sea of blood and a headless body while Reiko's quiet voice is heard singing.
