It stars Tim Roth, John Malkovich, Isaach De Bankolé and James Fox. It is the third screen adaptation of the novella, following a 1958 television adaptation for the series Playhouse 90, and 1979's Apocalypse Now, which loosely adapted it and updated it to the Vietnam War.

The film was filmed as a co-production with Ted Turner's Turner Pictures, and then aired by his TNT network.

Synopsis

Ivory trader Captain Charles Marlowe (Roth) is sent up the Congo River to retrieve cargo, and along the way, learns of the successful and enigmatic trader Kurtz (Malkovich), who is worshiped as a god by the natives.

Chas (James Fox) is a member of an East London gang led by Harry Flowers (Johnny Shannon); his speciality is intimidation through violence as he collects pay-offs for Flowers. He is very good at his job, and has a reputation for liking it. His sexual liaisons are casual and rough. When Flowers decides to take over a betting shop, owned by Joey Maddocks (Anthony Valentine), he forbids Chas to get involved, as he feels Chas's complicated personal history with Maddocks (which is at least partly gay) may lead to trouble. Chas is angry about this and later humiliates Maddocks, who retaliates by wrecking Chas's apartment and attacking Chas. Chas shoots him, packs a suitcase and runs from the scene.

Maria Vial is a white French farmer who runs (with her ex-husband, Andre, and his sickly father) a failing coffee plantation in an unnamed African country in the present day. Maria and Andre have a lazy mentally unstable son, Manuel, while Andre has another half-African son Jose. Civil war has broken out and rebel soldiers, many of them child soldiers, are advancing on the area. The French military, while pulling out, makes one final plea for Maria to leave, but unyielding in her desire to protect her family's home and blinded by her own anti-white prejudice she ignores the warnings. Meanwhile, a rebel DJ on the radio urges the rebels on and advocates attacks on emblems of colonialism. Maria's workers fearing the conflict flee. Maria stubbornly refuses to abandon the plantation and its harvest which will be ready in five days. Risking her life and unable to find Andre she drives to a village to hire men to finish harvesting of the coffee. On the way, she is forced to pay off bandits who threaten to kill her at a roadblock they have established. After hiring the workers she stops at the elementary school and collects Andre's other son Jose. Jose is upbeat boy of about 12. He is black and we later learn that his mother is the much younger housekeeper for Andre's father.

The film begins with an adult woman named France, walking down a road toward Douala, Cameroon. While walking, she is picked up by William J. Park (Emmet Judson Williamson), an African American who has moved to Africa and is driving to Limbe with his son. As they ride, France's mind drifts and we see her as a young girl in Northern French Cameroon where her father was a colonial administrator. The story is conducted through the eyes of young France, showing her friendship with the "houseboy", Protée, as well the sexual tension between him and her young and beautiful mother, Aimée. The conflict of the film comes from the discomfort created as France and her mother attempt to move past the established boundaries between themselves and the native Africans. This is brought to a head through Luc Segalen (Jean-Claude Adelin), a Western drifter who stays with the Dalens family after a small aircraft crashes nearby. He makes public the evident sexual attraction between Aimée and Protée, prompting the mother to act on her desire. This results in a fight between Luc and Protée, who consequently loses his in-house job and is moved to work outdoors in the garage as a mechanic.

The house, in the crossfire of the two sides, is a strategic lookout point that the Israeli army decides to seize, confining the family to a few downstairs rooms in daytime and a single room at night. Mohammad refuses to leave this home and, reinforced by his principles against violence, decides to find a way to keep his family together in the house until the Israeli soldiers move on.
