The film portrays the life of the saint Maria Goretti. Augusto Genina was awarded the Nastro d'Argento for Best Director for the film. In 2008 the film was selected to enter the list of the 100 Italian films to be saved. The film's sets were designed by Virgilio Marchi.
Synopsis
Maria Goretti vit avec ses cinq frères et ses parents dans une zone malsaine frappée par la malaria, où habitent également Alessandro Serenelli et son père. Le père de Maria meurt. Alessandro Serenelli désire Maria, qui se refuse. Alessandro finit par la tuer.Actors

Despite knowing of her jealous fiancé Andre's strong contempt for beauty contests, typist Lucienne "Lulu" Garnier (Louise Brooks) (along with many other hopefuls) mails two photographs of herself to enter the Miss France contest sponsored by the Globe newspaper. Upon further consideration, she tries to withdraw, but it is too late: she has already been chosen as a finalist. When she wins, she has to travel to Spain immediately to compete for the crown of Miss Europe without having an opportunity to break the news to Andre. The film is set in 1941 during the Second World War, when the city of Benghazi in Italian-ruled Libya was occupied by British forces. Annesa (played by Columba Dominguez), is a from a declining aristocratic family and very much devoted to her family, the Decherchi, which is at the edge of financial collapse.
