Johanna Renssaller, qui vit dans une ferme de Pennsylvanie avec ses parents, son frère et ses sœurs, rêve d'avoir un fiancé qui apporterait romance et excitation dans sa vie monotone. Ce rêve se réalise lorsqu'un régiment entier de recrues pour la Première Guerre mondiale campe sur les terres de la ferme. Devenue d'un coup le centre de toutes les attentions, Johanna décide de s'embellir en prenant un bain de lait à la laiterie, mais, alors qu'elle en train de se baigner, le jeune Lieutenant Le Roy fait irruption. Les cris de Johanna attirent le soldat Vibbard, qui insulte le lieutenant, ce qui sera la cause de son arrestation. Les deux hommes sont amoureux de Johanna, mais à la cour martiale elle rencontre le Capitain Van Rensaller, dont elle tombe amoureuse. Le Roy abandonne les charges contre Vibbard, et Johanna part avec le capitaine pour se marier.

A former cowboy movie star Rex Roper (John Forsythe) decides to run for Mayor of Crescent Bay, California. In a dilapidated apartment building in post-apocalyptic France, food is in short supply and grain is used as currency. The movie opens with Ruth Stoops and a man (apparently an ex-boyfriend) having intercourse on a bed in a flophouse, after which he disrespectfully throws her out of the apartment. Joan (Judy Davis) is a young Australian communist who goes to the Soviet Union as part of a work study program in the 1950s. There she catches the eye of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin (F. Murray Abraham) and the two sleep together just before Stalin dies. Returning to Australia, Joan discovers she is pregnant and gives birth to Stalin's love child, whom she names Joe (Richard Roxburgh). Her son has a troubled upbringing, rebelling against both his mother's left wing politics and Australian society in general. He spends time in jail where he learns about Stalin's crimes from a fellow inmate. Upon release marries Anna (Rachel Griffiths) a police officer who had arrested him. She is the child of Ukrainian refugees who fled to Australia to escape Stalin's purges. Pledging to go on the straight and narrow, Joe rises to become the head of Australia's police union and seizes more and more political power. Anna learns of Joe's true parentage, but keeps this secret from Joe out of love and a conviction that she cannot truly know for certain. The secret eats at their relationship and Joe resents the secrecy when it is revealed.
