Frank Spottiswoode Aitken (16 April 1868 – 26 February 1933) was a Scottish actor of the silent era.

Aitken was one of the first actors to settle in Los Angeles when the film industry was still at its strongest in New York. He invested most of his earnings in property, buying up orange groves around what would become Hollywood.

Biography

Spottiswoode Aitken commence par être acteur au théâtre en Grande Bretagne à 17 ans en 1886. Il émigre aux États-Unis en 1901 et y continue ce métier lors de nombreuses tournées. C'est lors de l'une d'elles qu'il rencontre D. W. Griffith. Il commence à travailler pour la Biograph à New-York in 1910. Il est l'un des premiers acteurs à s'installer à Los Angeles alors que l'industrie cinématographique battait son plein à New York.

Il a travaillé notamment avec D. W. Griffith et est connu pour son interprétation du "Dr Cameron" dans "Naissance d'une nation".

Il arrête sa carrière en 1927 à cause d'une santé défaillante.

On her deathbed, the mother of Avis Langley begs her to watch over her wayward twin brother, Alec. Just before Avis is to be married to Geoffrey Southerne, Alec disappears and the spirit of Mrs. Langley appears to Avis to remind her of her promise. Samuel Ackroyd, from New Zealand, calls to explain that Alec who is engaged to his daughter has disappeared. When impoverished Nanette Roland refuses to marry Buck McDougall until she is convinced that her long-absent fiancé, Raoul Challoner, is dead, Buck obtains false evidence of Challoner's death and Nanette yields to his wishes. At their wedding ceremony, Raoul appears and is about to take Nanette away, when Buck attacks him and, in the ensuing battle, Raoul accidentally kills a man and is arrested. That night, Nanette helps him escape and, after a hasty wedding, they flee into the wilderness. Corporal O'Connor of the North-West Mounted Police is given the assignment of capturing him, and three years later, the Mountie, aided by Buck, discovers Raoul's cabin in the woods. Just as he arrests the fugitive, a forest fire breaks out, trapping Nanette, Raoul and their baby in the flames. O'Connor, injured by a fallen tree, is rescued by Raoul and the four reach safety, but Buck perishes in the fire. O'Connor, feeling a debt of gratitude, agrees to testify to Raoul's death and the family realizes that their troubles are at an end.
