Journalist Johnny Barrett (Peter Breck) thinks that the quickest way to a Pulitzer Prize is to uncover the facts behind a murder at a mental hospital. He convinces an expert psychiatrist to coach him to appear insane; this involves relating imaginary accounts of incest with his "sister", who is impersonated by his exotic-dancer girlfriend (Constance Towers). Barrett convinces the authorities and is locked up in the institution where the murder took place. While pursuing his investigation, he is disturbed by the behavior of his fellow inmates.

Joseph W. Randall (Edward G. Unscrupulous newspaper photographer Jack Early (Duff) is sent to take a picture of racketeer Nick Palmer (Brian Donlevy), who doesn't like to be captured on celluloid. Palmer takes a liking to Early and asks him to frame his henchmen Colton (Tierney). Duff double-crosses Palmer and informes Colton that his boss had planned to frame him. Shortly afterward Palmer is killed by a car bomb and Duff becomes famous for taking a picture of the event. Eventually Duff is himself killed by Colton but he manages to snap a picture of his murderer in the act.

Daily Flash newspaper journalist Brenda Starr (Joan Woodbury), and her photographer, Chuck Allen (Syd Saylor), assigned to cover a fire in an old house where they discover the wounded Joe Heller (Wheeler Oakman),a mobster suspected of stealing a quarter-million dollar payroll. The dying Heller tells Brenda that someone took his satchel of stolen money and he gives her a coded message. Kruger (Jack Ingram), the gangster who shot Heller, escapes to his gang's hideout with the bag but discovers it is filled with paper rather than money. The gang, knowing Heller gave Brenda a coded message makes many attempts on her life to get her to reveal where Heller hid the payroll money. But thanks to Chuck and Police Lieutenant Larry Farrel (Kane Richmond), she evades them, until Pesky (William 'Billy' Benedict), a Daily Flash office boy succeeds in decoding the Heller message.
