I Am Alive: Surviving the Andes Plane Crash is a 2010 television documentary recounting the tragedy of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 from the perspective of survivor Nando Parrado. Directed by Brad Osborne, this 2-hour special features reenactments of the October 13, 1972 crash and the 72-day struggle for survival that followed, including details of the 37-mile trek out of the mountains by Parrado and fellow survivor Roberto Canessa. Appearing in the film are Parrado, Canessa, Eduardo Strauch and several other survivors, original search teams, historians, expert pilots, high-altitude medical experts, and others including Piers Paul Read (author of Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors), renowned mountaineer Ed Viesturs, and Andes Survivors expert/alpinist Ricardo Peña (who led the only expedition to date to repeat and document the survivors escape route and has made many discoveries at the site of the crash). I Am Alive was produced by AMS Pictures and premiered on the History Channel on October 20, 2010. It was released for DVD on February 22, 2011.

Synopsis

Le vendredi 13 octobre 1972, un avion reliant Montevideo à Santiago au Chili avec à son bord 45 passagers, membres de l’équipe de rugby de Montevideo s’écrase dans la Cordillère des Andes. Pendant 72 jours, le monde a cru que tous les passagers étaient morts pourtant 16 d’entre eux survécurent au crash. À 3600 m d’altitude et dans des conditions climatiques extrêmes, les survivants ont dû se résoudre au pire pour lutter contre la faim. Leur combat pour la vie a fait les gros titres de la presse internationale, des « unes » dans lesquelles on pouvait lire le mot « cannibalisme ». Ce documentaire poignant revient sur ce qui est probablement à ce jour le récit le plus douloureux jamais conté de la bouche même de l’un de ses survivants, Nando Parrado.

The film opens with a series of photographs of the Stella Maris College's Old Christians Rugby Team. Carlitos Páez explains that the pictures were taken by his father and points out several members of the team, including himself as a young man, Alex Morales, Felipe Restano, Nando Parrado and the team's Captain Antonio Balbi. Carlitos then reflects on the accident in a brief monologue, speaking of heroism, the gravity of the situation and of solitude and faith.
