Le film retrace les tribulations de Marcella Valmarin (Agostina Belli), pendant le Fascisme, son écroulement, puis pendant l'après-guerre. D'abord femme de chambre, puis prostituée, elle devient diva du régime sous le nom d'Alba Doris et maîtresse du Duce puis se marie après la libération avec un riche industriel suisse. Pendant ce temps, son fiancé Roberto (Cochi Ponzoni), qui sera en fin de compte le seul à n'avoir jamais couché avec elle, est blessé pendant la guerre contre l'URSS, abandonné par ses camarades, et recueilli par une paysanne russe avec laquelle il vivra comme un pauvre moujik. À la fin du film, les anciens amoureux se croisent, mais sans le savoir.

Marco Ravicchio, responsable des relations publiques d'une modeste société de production cinématographique italienne, part pour Buenos Aires pour présenter un film lors d'un festival. Il est accompagné d'un scénariste vorace et sordide, deux actrices sans talent à la recherche de publicité et une troisième actrice, Luciana, qui n'est plus très jeune et qui espère trouver un mari argentin fortuné. A Buenos Aires, le groupe est importuné par un riche émigrant italien, l'ingénieur Marucchelli, qui a fait de la nostalgie son passe-temps favori. Marco n'obtient pas de le prêt de son ami Stefano, émigré des années auparavant et demande l'argent à l'ingénieur Marucchelli qui ne lui donne que des belles paroles. A la fin du festival, le groupe retourne en Italie avec un peu d'expérience et beaucoup déception.

Gepy is a famous host of a very popular Italian talk show in Rome. On the talk show, in which the serious problems of the Italians of the lower middle class are (trivially) analyzed, one day a disabled girl who is forced in a wheelchair is invited to participate. The young girl named Arianna immediately discovers the careless manner that Gepy uses to analyze the problems of the participants, because he almost uses them as puppets to advertise himself. Set in Rome and its surroundings, the film tells in a frighteningly realistic, ruthless and grotesque the evil of two powerful men of Italy in the seventies: a Director of illegal buildings (Vittorio Gassman), extremist fascist, and an upright judge, cynical looking in part to the Italian law (Ugo Tognazzi). Both can not stand each other, given the contrasts between the two men in any social, political and philosophical. Everyone hates each other and would like to delete it, but just because of the bad example that the two men give power to the people, many Italians are adversely affected because of cheating and rudeness of the fascist manufacturer and the communist magistrate. The director Dino Risi underlines the misdeeds and the weakness of the Italian people to react accordingly, by focusing on the story of these two men who are each other's opposite of the net.
