Sorti en avril 2001, le film a pulvérisé tous les records de box office en Uruguay. Il a été le premier film soumis par l'Uruguay à la considération de l'Académie pour l'Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère à Los Angeles en 2002.
Synopsis
Elisa (27), mère de deux garçons, rêve d’installer un salon de coiffure dans un des quartiers les plus chics de Montévidéo. Quand elle se trouve, en moins de vingt-quatre heures, sans toit, sans amant, sans travail et sans argent, Loulou, sa meilleure amie, réussit à lui procurer un boulot dans une maison close. Là, elle fait connaissance avec un homme d'affaires qui lui propose de l'emmener avec lui en Espagne, pour réunir l’argent nécessaire à installer son salon de coiffure, se donnant ainsi la possibilité d’assurer un meilleur avenir à ses enfants. Mais les événements ne se dérouleront pas comme prévu.Comments

In New York City, soft-spoken Helen returns to the apartment she shares with her boyfriend Marco after enduring an unhygienic and inept abortion. Although Helen becomes ill from the procedure, Marco is satisfied because he was able to procure the abortion through bartering, and thus did not have to expend any money. When Marco leaves briefly to collect some cash, Bobby, an amiable small-time drug dealer to whom Marco owes money, shows unexpected gentleness and concern for Helen. Soon after, when Helen is hospitalized for profuse bleeding, Bobby sneaks in after visiting hours and tells her that Marco has gone away. Briefly, Helen considers returning to her dysfunctional family in Fort Wayne, Indiana. However, after she is released from the hospital, she moves in with Bobby. As they are walking together, Bobby steals a television out of a parked van and pawns it for money to buy drugs. At his apartment, Bobby declines Helen's invitation to have sex until she feels better. When she awakens to find him taking drugs, he explains that he is not an addict, but only "chipping.

Ben Sanderson (Cage) is a Hollywood screenwriter whose alcoholism costs him his job, family, and friends. With nothing left to live for, he moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death. As he drives drunkenly down the Las Vegas Strip, he nearly hits a woman, Sera (Shue), on the crosswalk. Sera chastises him and walks away. Sera is a prostitute working for an abusive pimp, Yuri Butso (Julian Sands), a Latvian immigrant. Polish mobsters are after Yuri, so he breaks his relationship with Sera in fear that the Poles may hurt her. Yuri is murdered (off-screen) shortly afterwards.

Born into a wealthy family of French vintners, Max (Michel Piccoli) is a loner who devoted himself entirely to his obsession: the arrest of criminals. A former judge he is a police inspector and he sees a new band of burglars escape. This failure is still fresh in his mind when he meets Abel who has become a scrap thief and plunders construction sites with a small band of hoodlums around Nanterre. Max plans to encourage them to commit something big and catch them on the spot. Posing as a client, he meets Lily (Romy Schneider), a young German-born prostitute who is the companion of Abel. He pretends to be the director of a small bank branch which receives significant amounts of money at regular intervals. He ensures the support of his police commissioner. Max fails however to reveal his role as instigator. Gradually, some feeling arises between Max and Lily. But Max keeps a reserved attitude and merely influences the scrap through her. Finally, guessing the band ready for action, he communicates an ideal date to commit robbery. On the scheduled day, the police await them and they are arrested. Later in the police station, Rosinsky (the top cop in the bank's district) reveals to Max that he wants all collaborators brought to justice, including Lily. Distraught, Max tries to save her and ends up threatening Rosinsky. In an argument, Max pulls out his gun and kills him.

In 1921 in a street called Melchiorgasse in the poor part of Vienna, Austria, there are only two wealthy people: the butcher Josef Geiringer and Mrs. Greifer, who runs a fashion boutique and a nightclub, patronized by wealthy Viennese. Uruguay 1966. Aurelio Saavedra (43), un politicien influent, ramène chez lui Masángeles (7), sa fille illégitime, après le suicide de sa mère. Aurora (43), sa femme, ne s’en remettra jamais. Aurora ignore la réalité de la pauvreté et se réfugie dans les rénovations perpétuelles de la maison. La sœur d’Aurelio et son mari ne pensent qu’à s’enrichir. Le fils d’Aurelio, Santiago, commence à se préoccuper de justice sociale et rejoint la guérilla après leur invasion de la maison.
