Though this is Beguigui's first feature-length fiction film it is largely descriptive of her family's experience moving to France and the struggles for autonomy Algerian women continue to face even today. The film won a variety of international awards, including the 2001 International Critics' Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Although Benguigui was urged to change the name of the film after the September 11 attacks, she chose to keep the original title, a portion of which is in Algerian Arabic. This film explores the complexities of immigration and the role of women in Algerian society.
Synopsis
En 1974, à l'époque du regroupement familial, Zouina, une maghrébine d'une trentaine d'années arrive d'Algérie avec ses trois enfants pour s'installer à Saint-Quentin, en Picardie, sous l'étroite surveillance de sa belle-mère Aïcha. Elle vient rejoindre Ahmed, son mari, dont elle vit séparée depuis dix ans et qu'elle considère presque comme un inconnu. Celui-ci est ouvrier spécialisé dans une usine textile. Zouina partage sa cour avec un couple de retraités. L'arrivée de cette famille est une véritable catastrophe pour Monsieur et Madame Donze et les hostilités ne tardent pas à se déclarer.Actors

Filmed in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and exploring themes of globalization, class distinctions and income inequality, the film opens in the French seaside town of Dunkirk. France (Karin Viard), a middle-aged divorcée, has just been laid off after 20 years at the same shipping company. She takes an overdose of pills but is rushed to hospital and makes a complete recovery. Okwe is an illegal Nigerian immigrant to the United Kingdom who drives a cab in London during the day and works at the front desk of a hotel at night. The hotel is staffed with many immigrants, both legal and illegal. Okwe keeps himself awake by chewing khat, an herbal stimulant. A doctor in his home country, he was forced to flee after being falsely accused of murdering his wife. In London, he is pressed into giving medical treatment to other poor immigrants, including fellow cab drivers with venereal diseases. Omar Ali is a young man living in Battersea in the Wandsworth area of South London, right by the railway station during the mid-1980s. His father, Hussein, once a famous left-wing British Pakistani journalist in Bombay, lives in London but hates Britain's society and its international politics. His dissatisfaction with the world and a family tragedy have led him to sink into alcoholism, so that Omar has to be his carer. Shun Li (Zhao Tao) has been working in a textile workshop in the outskirts of Rome for eight years trying to obtain the documents to bring her son to Italy.
