Synopsis
Roberto Rossellini entend démythifier l’Inde derrière ses charmeurs de serpents, Ghandi et Nehru, sa religion, ses castes, ses éléphants ou ses tigres. India est un documentaire sur l’Inde contemporaine autant qu’une série de fictions sans acteur professionnel. C’est aussi un certain cinéma : celui qui refuse, avec les moyens techniques, le poids de l’argent et qui se défend de l’esthétisme. Rossellini récusait Jean-Luc Godard jugeant le film "beau comme la création du monde" et envisageait son œuvre comme une ouverture à la réalité, "pour commencer à nous orienter".Comments

Illibatezza ("Chastity") by Roberto Rossellini is a story of a beautiful stewardess which attracts unwanted attention from one of the air travelers - a middle aged American. The two overnight by chance in the same hotel. She has a fiancé back home, to whom she sends 8mm films made with her camera. These show how, in order to shoo away the unwanted flirtatious attentions of the traveler, all she had to do was to act in an aggressively provocative way; his sexual attraction being fueled by the shyness with which she initially tried to endure his advances.

Paola a quitté son village des Abruzzes contre le gré de ses parents, et mène à Milan une vie facile et paresseuse en tirant ses ressources des hommes que sa beauté et sa sensualité mettent à ses pieds. Elle fait la connaissance de Giovanni, un horticulteur passionné par son métier, à qui elle raconte qu'elle étudie dans une école de couture. Progressivement des liens amoureux se tissent entre eux et Paola décide de revenir dans son village, pour tenter de renouer avec sa famille et de mener une vie « honnête » en attendant que Giovanni vienne l'y retrouver. Mais au village sa réputation de « fille perdue » est bien établie, son père la rejette, sa sœur Anna, qui tout d'abord l'a accueillie avec affection, se retourne contre elle lorsqu'elle se rend compte que son mari Nando est attiré par Paola, comme tous les hommes du village. La veille de l'arrivée de Giovanni, son ancien amant Riccardo la menace de tout révéler de sa vie passée si elle refuse de coucher avec lui. Nando les surprend, une dispute violente éclate, et Paola comprend qu'elle ne pourra jamais effacer son passé. Elle se jette du haut d'un pont et meurt sur le coup.
