Devi (Nalini), a college student has a strange premonition one night of her sister being murdered. Her sister soon goes missing. After a few years, Devi meets and marries a rich businessman Ramkumar (Mohan). Soon after, Devi has another vision of an unknown woman being murdered and seeks the help of her brother-in-law Dr.Raj (Vijayakanth) to help her save the possible victim. Raj is reluctant to believe her story but assists her anyway. Devi also finds a decomposed body in the bungalow where she lives with Ramkumar, which she believes is her sister's based on her previous vision. Devi and Raj's investigations lead them to the museum where Devi's sister worked and a strange man (Sathyaraj) who tries to assassinate them. Amavasai (Sathyaraj),homeless but egoistic, gets acquainted to politician Manimaran, then MLA of palladam constituency, near tirupur (Manivannan). Amavasai helps Mani with some petty tasks during election campaign and meetings. Amavasai grows into a well acclaimed helper and first associate for Mani. Meanwhile Amavasai falls in love with thayamma(Kasthuri) and one day gives her some drug making her groggy and then deflowers her. Mani instructs Amavasai to stand for MLA election as independent candidate in the coming general election with his support as mani was not given his party ticket. Amavasai wins by huge margin and becomes the MLA. He forgets his relationship with Kasthuri and rejects her pregnancy and child. Kasthuri and her parents move out of that village to avoid humiliation. Soon kasthuri gives birth to a boy and dies. Amavasai forgets Mani's help and forces him in role under him. He changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan for gaining social status. He marries the only daughter of the rich local landlord, Sivakami (Sujatha) and even cheats him of his Palace. Over years Amavasai grows into highly influential and corrupt politician with high criminal affluence. He builds a strong political empire through shortcuts. Arukkani (Suhasini Maniratnam) is an illiterate village girl and her father is upset to not find her a groom. One day, her father meets his old friend Bhoothalingam and shares his sadness, Bhoothalingam proposes his son to marry her and Arukkani's father accepts. Murali (Mohan), Bhoothalingam's son, is an handsome man and also a successful sales manager. He doesn't see his future wife yet and he is excited to see her. At his marriage's day, Murali is shocked to see his future wife Arukkani who is ugly and gets married with her anyway. Murali feels very disappointed and cannot bear her. He takes a transfer to Bangalore leaving his father and his wife. In Bangalore, he gets friendly with his colleague Julie (Radha), who is modern and good-looking. They fall in love with each other and they get married. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.
