A romantic melodrama set against the backdrop of a smallpox epidemic which features Richard Johnson as the diligent doctor in control and Claire Bloom as his outwardly serene and devoted wife. Commencing on New Year’s Eve in the city of Bath, Dr. Steven Monks (Richard Johnson) diagnoses a mystery patient as being infected with smallpox and sets in motion a city wide quarantine to contain the outbreak. His commitment to the task is affected by the deterioration of his marriage to ex-nurse Julie (Claire Bloom) following his clandestine affair with a family friend. Monk receives an unexpected blow when the disease strikes closer to home than anticipated and Julie is diagnosed as having contracted the virus. The medical team gradually contain the outbreak until only one unidentified case remains. The search narrows the identity of final carrier down to Ruth Preston (Yolande Donlan), the woman with whom Monks had been having an affair and the wife of his close colleague Clifford (Michael Goodliffe). She’s eventually traced to a deserted house where she’s sheltering, lonely and desperately ill.

As the Pacific War draws to an end, the commandant of the Blood Island prisoner-of-war camp has let it be known that should Japan surrender, he will order the massacre of the entire captive population. When the prisoners hear through underground sources that Japan has indeed surrendered, they mobilise themselves to try to prevent the news reaching the commandant. Colonel Lambert (Morell), the authoritarian self-appointed leader of the prisoners, deems that they must sabotage communications between the camp and the outside world, and arm themselves in however makeshift a way in readiness for a final showdown.

Après qu'un agent secret britannique a été tué à Beyrouth par des communistes, le Colonel MacGillivray persuade le docteur Jason Love d'aller au Moyen-Orient pour trouver ce que cet agent avait découvert. Parce qu'il a fait un peu de renseignements pendant la guerre, Jason accepte en s'attendant à un peu d'aventure au soleil. En route pour le Liban, il rencontre un mannequin, Vikki, et décide de prendre l'avion suivant pour rester avec elle. En voyant l'avion qu'il aurait dû prendre exploser peu après le décollage, Jason se rend compte que cette mission est plus sérieuse qu'il ne le pensait. À Beyrouth, il apprend que les communistes prévoient d'assassiner le Prince Zahlouf, proche des Britanniques, dans le but de compromettre des accords sur le pétrole. Bien qu'il fasse échouer la tentative d'attentat, il est obligé de se réfugier sur le toit d'un château pour échapper à la foule en colère. Il y est secouru par un hélicoptère russe, la "colombe de la paix". Jason y retrouve Vikki. Elle essaye de le sauver mais est abattue. Jason arrive néanmoins à sauter de l'hélicoptère. Un message de MacGillivray lui propose une autre mission, mais il décline l'offre.

A lone man walks through the sweltering streets of a deserted London. The film then goes back several months. Peter Stenning (Judd) was an up-and-coming journalist with the Daily Express but a messy divorce has thrown his life into disarray. His Editor (Christiansen) has begun giving him lousy assignments. Paul Scofield plays Johnny, a slimy, small-time music promoter and talent scout who notices teenage girls going crazy for the singing and bongo playing of talentless and seemingly idiotic Herbert Rudge (played by James Kenny). Johnny rechristens Rudge as "Bongo Herbert" and signs him to a contract that gives Johnny a 50% share of the profits. With Johnny's help, Bongo rockets to stardom. Bongo's success attracts a host of sleazy music industry types intent on exploiting him.
