The Day the Earth Caught Fire is a British science fiction disaster film starring Edward Judd, Leo McKern and Janet Munro. It was directed by Val Guest and released in 1961, and is one of the classic apocalyptic films of its era. The film opened at the Odeon Marble Arch in London on 23 November 1961.
The film, which was partly made on location in London and Brighton, used matte painting to create images of abandoned cities and desolate landscapes. The production also featured the real Daily Express, even using the paper's own headquarters, the Daily Express Building in Fleet Street, London.
Synopsis
A lone man walks through the sweltering streets of a deserted London. The film then goes back several months. Peter Stenning (Judd) was an up-and-coming journalist with the Daily Express but a messy divorce has thrown his life into disarray. His Editor (Christiansen) has begun giving him lousy assignments. He begins drinking too much. (One of his lines is, "Alcoholics of the press, unite!") Stenning's only friend, Bill Maguire (McKern), is a veteran Fleet Street reporter who offers him encouragement and occasionally covers for him by writing his copy.Actors

As the Pacific War draws to an end, the commandant of the Blood Island prisoner-of-war camp has let it be known that should Japan surrender, he will order the massacre of the entire captive population. When the prisoners hear through underground sources that Japan has indeed surrendered, they mobilise themselves to try to prevent the news reaching the commandant. Colonel Lambert (Morell), the authoritarian self-appointed leader of the prisoners, deems that they must sabotage communications between the camp and the outside world, and arm themselves in however makeshift a way in readiness for a final showdown.

The lost remnants of a British Army Brigade headquarters make their way through the Burmese jungle, retreating from the Japanese. As Prof. Bernard Quatermass (Brian Donlevy) struggles to gain government support for his Moon colonisation project, his interest becomes focused on reports of hundreds of meteorites landing in Winnerden Flats. Travelling there with Marsh, his colleague (Bryan Forbes), Quatermass finds a huge complex under construction, based on his lunar colony plans. Marsh discovers that an undamaged meteorite is shaped like a small stone rocket. It then cracks open, releasing a gas, leaving him with an odd V-shaped mark on his face. Black-clad guards from the complex arrive, armed with machine guns and sporting similar V-shaped marks, and take Marsh away, knocking down Quatermass and ordering him away.

Après qu'un agent secret britannique a été tué à Beyrouth par des communistes, le Colonel MacGillivray persuade le docteur Jason Love d'aller au Moyen-Orient pour trouver ce que cet agent avait découvert. En voyant l'avion qu'il aurait dû prendre exploser peu après le décollage, Jason se rend compte que cette mission est plus sérieuse qu'il ne le pensait. À Beyrouth, il apprend que les communistes prévoient d'assassiner le Prince Zahlouf, proche des Britanniques, dans le but de compromettre des accords sur le pétrole. Bien qu'il fasse échouer la tentative d'attentat, il est obligé de se réfugier sur le toit d'un château pour échapper à la foule en colère. Il y est secouru par un hélicoptère russe, la "colombe de la paix". Jason y retrouve Vikki. Elle essaye de le sauver mais est abattue. Jason arrive néanmoins à sauter de l'hélicoptère. Un message de MacGillivray lui propose une autre mission, mais il décline l'offre.
