Joker est un thriller psychologique américain, coécrit et réalisé par Todd Phillips, sorti en 2019. Il raconte, dans une histoire originale, la transformation d'Arthur Fleck en Joker, un dangereux tueur psychopathe qui deviendra le plus grand ennemi de Batman.

Le film est présenté en compétition officielle à la Mostra de Venise 2019 où il reçoit le Lion d'or et est ovationné.

Véritable triomphe au box-office, et bénéficiant de critiques élogieuses, il crée toutefois une polémique, notamment aux États-Unis, du fait de reproches d’apologie de la violence, lesquels demeurent contestés par le réalisateur. Le jeu d'acteur de Joaquin Phoenix est quant à lui particulièrement salué.

Synopsis

L'histoire se déroule en 1981, à Gotham City. Arthur Fleck travaille dans une agence de clowns. Méprisé et incompris par ceux qui lui font face, il mène une morne vie en marge de la société et habite dans un immeuble miteux avec sa mère Penny. Un soir, il se fait agresser dans le métro par trois hommes alcoolisés qui le brutalisent, le poussant à les tuer en retour. Son geste inspire à une partie de la population l'idée de s'en prendre eux aussi aux puissants ; Arthur bascule peu à peu dans la folie et finit par devenir le Joker, un dangereux tueur psychopathe victime d'hallucinations.

Rupert Pupkin (De Niro), a stage-door autograph hound, is an aspiring stand-up comedian unsuccessfuly trying to launch his career. To celebrate his upcoming marriage to Tracy Garner (Sasha Barrese), Doug Billings (Justin Bartha) travels to Las Vegas with his best friends Phil Wenneck (Bradley Cooper) and Stu Price (Ed Helms), as well as Tracy's brother and Doug's future brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis), in Doug's future father-in-law's vintage Mercedes-Benz. They stay at Caesars Palace, where they relax in the room before celebrating with a few drinks on the hotel rooftop. The next morning, Phil, Stu, and Alan awaken to find they have no memory of the previous night, and Doug is nowhere to be found. Stu is missing a tooth, their hotel suite is in disarray, a tiger is in their bathroom, a chicken in their living room, and a baby is in the closet, whom they name "Carlos". They find Doug's mattress impaled on a statue outside of their hotel and when they ask for their Mercedes, the valet delivers an LVPD police cruiser.
