Journey to Mecca: In the Footsteps of Ibn Battuta is an IMAX ("giant screen") dramatised documentary film charting the first real-life journey made by the Islamic scholar Ibn Battuta from his native Morocco to Mecca for the Hajj (Muslim pilgrimage), in 1325.

Synopsis

Bien que peu connu en France, Ibn Battuta est un des explorateurs majeurs de l'Histoire. Célèbre aventurier marocain du 14ème siècle, il entreprend, en 1325, une expédition épique à La Mecque, centre historique et culturel de l'Islam. Il rentre 29 ans plus tard, après avoir traversé le monde, de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, l'Espagne et l'Inde à la Chine et les Maldives, parcourant plus de 120 000 kilomètres, soit trois fois la distance parcourue plus tard par Marco Polo ! Le Grand voyage d'Ibn Battuta retrace le premier pèlerinage de l'explorateur entre 1325 et 1326 de Tanger à la Mecque et dresse un riche portrait de la civilisation Islamique du 14ème siècle. Sur 1000 m2 d'écran hémisphérique, la beauté des paysages, le sens et le caractère épique de cette expédition sont démultipliés.

In Kraków during World War II, the Germans had forced local Polish Jews into the overcrowded Kraków Ghetto. Oskar Schindler, an ethnic German, arrives in the city hoping to make his fortune. A member of the Nazi Party, Schindler lavishes bribes on Wehrmacht (German armed forces) and SS officials and acquires a factory to produce enamelware. To help him run the business, Schindler enlists the aid of Itzhak Stern, a local Jewish official who has contacts with black marketeers and the Jewish business community. Stern helps Schindler arrange loans to finance the factory. Schindler maintains friendly relations with the Nazis and enjoys wealth and status as "Herr Direktor", and Stern handles administration. Schindler hires Jewish workers because they cost less, while Stern ensures that as many people as possible are deemed essential to the German war effort, which saves them from being transported to concentration camps or killed.

The film opens with a mysterious man, later referred to as "Byron" (portrayed by Bob Peck), running down a canyon, being harassed by an aeroplane. Byron takes refuge from his pursuers on a precipice overlooking the canyon. The plane lands and its occupants, two obsessive law enforcement officers named Will Tasker and Belitski (Mark Hamill and Kitty Aldridge), chase the man on foot. They shoot the fugitive through the arm with a grappling hook. The fugitive looks at his arm, but does not seem injured, only intrigued. Tasker pulls on the rope now connected to the fugitive. He tumbles down the side of the canyon, but once again is not harmed. Immediately after his fall, the fugitive recites the words of famous World War II aviator and poet John Gillespie Magee, Jr., "I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth - put out my hand and touched the Face of God.", from the poem High Flight.
