Juliette, or Key of Dreams (French: Juliette ou La clef des songes) is a 1951 French drama film directed by Marcel Carné. It was entered into the 1951 Cannes Film Festival. The film is based on a play by Georges Neveux.
Synopsis
Michel (Gérard Philipe) a volé dans la caisse du grand magasin où il travaille. Il a besoin de l'argent pour réaliser son projet : faire un voyage avec Juliette (Suzanne Cloutier), dont il est très amoureux. Mais il se retrouve en prison. Ses rêves l'emmènent dans un village provençal dont personne ne sait le nom et où personne ne se souvient de rien. Il ne tarde pas à y retrouver Juliette, qui elle, est courtisée par un châtelain mystérieux et inquiétant qui s'avèrera être Barbe-Bleue (Jean-Roger Caussimon). Juliette s'apprête à épouser le châtelain lorsque la sonnerie de la prison retentit, tirant Michel de ses rêves.

Marius works in the bar and his good friend since childhood, Fanny, works outside the bar selling cockles. Marius' jealousy of Panisse is the first indication of the secret feelings that he has for her, but much to his surprise, the feelings are reciprocated by Fanny. She confesses that she loves Marius prompting him to reveal his plans of traveling the world to her, noting that being the wife of a man at sea is not a desirable life. After a few nights, it is discovered that they have slept together and Marius's father and Fanny's mother convince him to marry her. Marius becomes noticeably melancholy after proposing to Fanny until a few days later, the date of departure of a boat on which Marius was supposed to crew. Fanny, realizing that Marius is not truly happy being with her, decides to encourage him to leave. She helps distract his father while Marius sneaks onto the boat.

When Nelly finds out that her godfather killed Maurice out of jealousy, she uses the information to blackmail him and prevent him from telling the police that Jean is a deserter. While the two are in love, Jean plans to leave on a ship for Venezuela. At the last minute Jean leaves the ship to say goodbye to Nelly; he saves her from the hands of Zabel, whom he kills, but when they go out on to the street he is shot in the back by Lucien and dies in her arms.
