Palanisamy (Sathyaraj) is an uneducated man who dreams to marry a teacher and lives with his friend Dhandapani (Goundamani). Palanisamy falls in love with Hamsaveni (Sukanya) at first sight. He decides to go to her village Irugur. First reluctant, she finally agrees to marry him, but only under three conditions : to continue to work as a teacher, to live in her hometown and with her father. After the marriage, Palanisamy imposes her three conditions : she must leave her hometown, be a teacher in the city that he has chosen and leave her father. Tulasi (Radha) is a village girl. One day she gets a letter from her cousin Subramani(Mohan). She gets excited as they were close friends in childhood but Mohan left with his family to city. Subramani visits the village for his college thesis about folk songs. Tulasi is in love with Subramani but she is confused whether Subramani also loves her. Tulasi's father passes away due to heart attack. When Subramani's mother arranges a marriage for Subramani with Tulsi he refuses. Because of this, her mother died in frustration. Then Tulasi comes to her Uncle's house. Later a flashback comes in which Subramani is in love with Noorjahan (Amala). Since Noorjahan used to come to the music college with veil, Subramani has not seen her face. On a day when they plan to meet, Noorjahan dies after she steps into quick sand. Finally whether Tulasi marries her beloved cousin Subramani is the story.

A rich estate owner is killed by his second wife and her brother Aadimoolam (Radharavi). The estate owner's son Raja (Rajinikanth) returns from USA and learns of this. In order to bring the culprits to book, he makes his friend Sethupati (Janakraj), a rickshaw puller, act as Raja. But soon, Aadimoolam learns of this and kills Sethu and frames Raja as the killer. Raja is sentenced to death. In between this Raja loves Senkamalam (Radha),sister of an employee in his estate. in the same village where Raja lives, there exists his lookalike, Chinnaraasu (Rajinikanth again), whose aim in life is to wed his sweetheart Lakshmi (Nadia). Raja escapes from jail and meets Chinnaraasu and makes Chinnaraasu take his place in jail. After many a twist and turns, Raja brings the culprits to book. At the end Raja marries Senkamalam and Chinnarasu marries Lakshimi.
