Stanislas Dubois, agent secret malgré lui, prend une confortable retraite et se consacre à la rédaction de ses souvenirs. Tout irait bien s'il ne prenait un coup de sang à la suite d'une critique acerbe de son dernier livre. L'auteur de la critique est une charmante blonde : Bénédicte Rameau, avec laquelle il se sent tout prêt à nouer des liens extra-professionnels. Le malheur veut qu'au soir de leur première rencontre, un semi-cadavre leur tombe dessus et expire en laissant échapper quelques mots mystérieux.
