The film shares its title but little else with the novel King of the Khyber Rifles (1916) by Talbot Mundy. This novel was also the basis for John Ford's The Black Watch (1929). The Khyber Pass scenes were shot in Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, California. Released by 20th Century Fox, the film was one of the first shot in Technicolor CinemaScope.
Synopsis
Alan King, dont le père était un officier britannique et la mère une indienne musulmane, est un officier brillant mais aussi un métis, ce qui l'exclut de la bonne société anglaise. Orphelin très jeune, il a été élevé avec Karram Khan qui devient un chef rebelle contre les Britanniques et cherche à fédérer les tribus le long de la frontière. King se voit confier un régiment d'élite composé de soldats musulmans. Au fort, la fille du général tombe amoureuse de lui, l'idylle paraît impossible à Alan qui propose de se sacrifier en tuant Karram Khan. Il échoue mais repart avec ses soldats à l'assaut du camp de Khan dans les montagnes. Khan est tué, Alan revient au fort en héros.Actors

In 1940, American-built North American Harvard training aircraft are flown to just outside Canada, where they are towed across the border for use by Britain. (The procedure is necessary to avoid violating the Neutrality Acts, as the United States is still neutral.) Cocky American pilot Tim Baker (Tyrone Power) decides to fly across the border to Trenton, Ontario, and winds up in trouble with the military authorities, unconvincingly claiming he was looking for Trenton, New Jersey. Baker ferries a Lockheed Hudson bomber to Britain, pocketing $1,000 for his work.

On the last day of 1770, youngster Jonathan Blake (Freddie Bartholomew) overhears two sailors discussing something suspicious in his aunt's ale-house in a Norfolk fishing village. He persuades his more respectable best friend, Horatio Nelson (Douglas Scott), to sneak aboard the sailors' ship with him. They overhear a plot involving insurance fraud. When Jonathan decides to warn the insurers, Horatio cannot accompany him, because that same day he is invited to join the Royal Navy as a midshipman. Jonathan walks all the way to London to Lloyd's Coffee House, where the insurers conduct their business. Mr. Angerstein (Guy Standing), the head of one of the syndicates that make up Lloyd's of London, listens to him. Instead of a monetary reward, Jonathan asks to work at Lloyd's as a waiter. Angerstein teaches him that news, "honestly acquired and honestly shared," is the lifeblood of the insurance industry.

Paris, 1922. Jake Barnes vit à Paris depuis sa démobilisation de la guerre 14/18 et il est journaliste au « New York Herald ». Un soir, il se rend à un bal musette où il retrouve des amis dont le romancier Robert Cohn. Arrive Lady Brett Ashley qui n’est pas une inconnue pour Jake. Elle fut son infirmière à l’hôpital pendant la guerre où ils tombèrent amoureux mais à la suite de sa blessure contractée sur le champ de bataille, Jake est devenu impuissant. Depuis, ils entretiennent une amitié amoureuse. Pour tenter d’oublier cette déconvenue Brett multiplie les aventures. Elle a promis d’épouser un Écossais Mike Campbell, joyeux drille plutôt porté sur la bouteille, tout en étant très courtisée notamment par Robert Cohn qui tombe immédiatement fou d’elle. En compagnie de son ancien compagnon d’armes, Bill Gorton, Jake part à Pampelune en Espagne assister aux corridas. À peine arrivé aux fêtes de la San Fermin, Jake a la surprise de retrouver Brett entourée de tous ses prétendants. Le groupe ne se quitte plus, et participe à toutes les festivités : débarquement des taureaux, encierro à travers les rues, corrida… Brett se laisse courtiser par un jeune torero, Pedro Romero, sous le regard furieux de Robert qui finit par agresser le jeune homme. Le lendemain, Pedro triomphe aux arènes et Jake apprend que Brett s’est enfuie en compagnie du torero. Pour Robert et Mike, la fête est finie. C’est à Biarritz que Jake reçoit des nouvelles de Brett, elle lui lance un appel de détresse espérant démarrer une nouvelle vie avec lui.

In August 1500, Andrea Orsini (Tyrone Power), an artistic minor nobleman who is equally skilled with the brush, the sword, words, and women, serves the Machiavellian Prince Cesare Borgia (Orson Welles) as a soldier.
