Synopsis
1974 en Albanie. Sous le gouvernement de Enver Hoxha, leader maoïste pendant 40 ans, Muro Neto, responsable de la défense de la nation contre un "ennemi invisible", décide que la "bunkerisation" est la seule façon de résister à une attaque surprise. Ainsi naît le colonel Bunker, "suprême défenseur de la nation" et apparatchik monstrueux. Il construit près de 800 000 bunkers, détruisant tout sur son chemin, fermant les yeux devant les procès et les exécutions. Pendant ce temps, son épouse assiste, impuissante, à sa paranoïa croissante.Actors

Karol Borowiecki (Daniel Olbrychski), a young Polish nobleman, is the managing engineer at the Bucholz textile factory. He is ruthless in his career pursuits and unconcerned with the long tradition of his, now financially declined, family. He plans to set up his own factory with the help of his friends Max Baum (Andrzej Seweryn), a German and heir to an old handloom factory, and Moritz Welt (Wojciech Pszoniak), an independent Jewish businessman. Borowiecki's affair with Lucy Zucker (Kalina Jędrusik), wife of another textile magnate, gives him advance notice of a change in cotton tariffs and helps Welt to make a killing on the Hamburg futures market. But more money has to be found, so all three characters cast aside their pride to raise the necessary capital.

Following a news story depicting the demolition of a slum in East London, South Africa, journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) seeks more information about the incident and ventures off to meet black activist Steve Biko (Denzel Washington). Biko has been officially banned by the South African government and is not permitted to leave his defined banning area at King William's Town. Woods is formally against Biko's banning, but remains critical of his political views. Biko invites Woods to visit a black township to see the impoverished conditions and to witness the effect of the government-imposed restrictions, which make up the apartheid system. Woods begins to agree with Biko's desire for a South Africa where blacks have the same opportunities and freedoms as those enjoyed by the white population. As Woods comes to understand Biko's point of view, a friendship slowly develops between them.
