Kotreshi Kanasu (Kannada: ಕೊಟ್ರೇಶಿ ಕನಸು, English: Dream of Kotreshi) is a 1994 Indian Kannada language film directed by Nagathihalli Chandrashekar starring Vijay Raghavendra and Karibasavaiah.

The film won two National Film Awards at 42nd National Film Awards; Best Feature Film in Kannada and Best Child Artist (Vijay Raghavendra).

Synopsis

Kotreshi Kanasu is set in the backdrop of the Indian caste system, it says the dreams and desires of an innocent boy of a lower caste, caught in the web of a discriminatory society. The film became a forum for discussion for its focus on the problems created by caste discrimination.

Three childhood friends — Surya (Ramesh Aravind), Shashank (Akshay Anand) and Bhoomi (Hema Panchamukhi) are from the coastal region of Karnataka. After finishing their undergraduate studies, Shashank goes to the US for further studies. Surya is extremely patriotic about India and doesn't want to go anywhere and starts his business in his hometown, and Bhoomi stays at home. After three years, Shashank comes back to India. He starts going off on India on his way from the airport, saying how much greater America is. While in India, his family arranges his marriage to Bhoomi. Surya, on the other hand, is the one who truly loves Bhoomi and tries to tell her using recorded audio tape and plants it in Bhoomi's room having no idea that she is to be married to Shashank.

Vinyas (Santhosh) working as an architect is shown a pink-slip from his employer due to the huge recession in economy. With the help of his friend Hanumanthu (Sharan), Vinyas sets up his own office and hires a brilliant interior architect Drushti (Aindrita). The team make some high profile work and get popular within few days. Meanwhile, he develops love towards Drushti to which she rejects as she already was in love with Jeevan (Aadarsh). Seeing the developments, Drushti quits the company and moves out with Jeevan and sets up her own business. Dejected by love, Vinyas begin to lose interest in his business and incurs huge loss. Later, he comes back to reality and revamps his business to get success again. In one of the architectural conferences, he meets Drushti and Jeevan again doing well for themselves and getting 2nd place at the competition. As a courtesy, Vinyas rejects his first prize and stages the sequence as to award Drushti the prize in his place. He walks out in deep satisfaction that he sacrificed with good intention.

The film starts with a happy small family of Hoovaiah (Dr.Vishnuvardhan) and Kanaka (Suhasini) having a small field growing flowers of Mallige, Sampige and other flowers which spread fragrance. The couple have three daughters in a small village of Jenu Koppa. Hoovaiah stands true to his devotion to Gandhi philosophy of Satyagraha come whatever may facing with nonchalance and non-violence. Globalization companies cause problems for the village as there are rich mine deposits nearby. Hoovaiah, zamindar of Jenu Koppa village, is a flower seller.Villagers revere him. When the government gives an MNC the licence to acquire land for mining in Jenukoppa, he strongly opposes it. But Kurupayya (Rangayana Raghu) joins hands with politicians and officials and tries to brainwash people to sell their land for a huge amount. Police atrocities and lathi charges on villagers force Hoovaiah to fight a lone battle against land acquisition. Fed up by the turn of events, all villagers decide to leave the village.But Hoovaiah launches a hunger strike to save the village and finally wins the battle.

The story line was loosely based on the Nepalese royal massacre involving Dipendra of Nepal. It was based on the tragedy that struck the family of the Nepal king. Ricky (Upendra) is an artiste. He happens to see a girl named Devyani (Keerthi Reddy) in an accident and falls for her. Subsequently, Devayani also falls in love. As she pretends that she does not love him, Ricky goes abroad. As per Ricky's plan, family members force Devayani to go to Hong Kong, where she meets Ricky. When both of them were enjoying the love, Prince Dipendra of Nepal (Upendra again) meets her and says that he loves her. Later, Devayani and Ricky return to India. Dipendra, who was madly in love with Devayani also comes to India and tells Ricky about his love. Dipendra discloses his identity to Ricky that he was the prince of Nepal. He loves her so much that he killed his entire family in the Nepalese royal massacre for her. When Ricky asks Devayani, she accepts that she was from Nepal and Dipendra loved her, although she never loved Dipendra. Ricky makes several attempts to convince Dipendra that his was a one-sided love and lies to Dipendra that Devayani forgot everything about him in a shock. Then Dipendra again enacts many of the love sequences between him and Devayani, so that Devyani gets back her memory. Devayani decides to commit suicide by jumping off a waterfall. Dipendra tries to save her but in the process he slips off the waterfall. Ricky arrives at the spot and Dipendra somehow manages to climb up the cliff.

Balu leaves Rukmini, comes back to Bangalore, becomes a lecturer and imposes the same theme: rich should become poor; poor should become rich. He changes his heart after seeing the positive sides of family life and decides to return to Rukmini. But the developments give him a shock of his life.
