Kunku (Marathi title) is a 1937 Marathi classic social drama film directed by V. Shantaram, and based on the novel, Na Patnari Goshta by Narayan Hari Apte, who also wrote film’s screenplay. The film was also released in Hindi as Duniya Na Mane (The Unexpected).

The movie went on to become both a critical and commercial success, and was shown at the Venice International Film Festival. The film is now hailed for "its daring attack on the treatment of women in Indian society." and depiction of child marriage.

For film's lead actress, Shanta Apte, it was third most memorable performance in a row, after V.Shantaram's previous classics, Amrit Manthan (1934) and Amar Jyoti (1936). Besides other songs, she also sang a full-fledged English song in the film: "A Psalm of Life", written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882).

Synopsis

The basic storyline revolves around a young woman, Nirmala (Shanta Apte) rebelling against her marriage to a much older widower, Kaka Saheb (Keshavrao Date), as was the practice in thosehe story is based on a novel by Shri. Narayan Hari Apte. It reminds us instinctively of the story of Sharada, a play by Deval which had long been a classic of Marathi theatre.

Saudamini (Durga Khote) is denied custody of her son by the Queen (Karuna Devi) and the tyrannical Minister of Justice Durjaya (Chandra Mohan) after she separates from her husband. Durjaya tells her that a woman is the slave of her husband and essentially has no rights. This enrages Saudamini and she vows vengeance and becomes a pirate. She and her pirates capture a ship which is supposed to be carrying the princess Nandini (Shanta Apte). However, she finds her old enemy Durjaya and takes him prisoner cutting off one of his legs. Nandini has been hiding in chest, and when she comes out of it, the imprisoned Durjaya sees her. He falls in love with her and offers her his food. Nandini however falls in love with a young shepherd boy Sudhir (Nandrekar). When she meets Saudamini and her helper Rekha (Vasanti) she joins them as a pirate and tells Sudhir off. Durjaya escapes with the help of Sudhir and arrives to arrest Saudamini. Saudamini is captured but the others along with Nandini and Rekha escape. It is finally revealed that Sudhir is Saudamini's long-lost son. Nandini and Sudhir marry and Rekha carries forward Saudamini's legacy.

Sherpal (Ulhas) and Tailab (Manmohan Krishan) are chiefs of two opposing clans who regularly meet at an annual competition that highlights their combative strengths in fields of weaponry. Sherpal's daughter Angara (Sandhya) is a tomboy who has been taught all that is required for the competition. She defeats Vikram (Prashant) who is from the clan of Taibal. The two fall in love, but cannot marry due to the old feud. Angara’s mother (Lalita Pawar) is after her to behave like a girl and dress accordingly. She finally gives in to her mother's demands. When her father dies, Mangal (M. Rajan) appears claiming to be her bethrothed, chosen by her father. When things start taking a violent turn she agrees to marry him. Mangal then treats her badly after marriage. Angara suffers the humiliation and even carries a heavy weight across the desert, a punishment meted out to her by Mangal. As she trudges through the desert she comes across a dying Vikram, who asks for water. She attempts to give him water against her husband's wishes, and is shot by Mangal. Angara and Vikram die together.

Rani (Sandhya) and her family are poor but she is not allowed to work when offered a job in a theatrical company, as it is against the custom of her family to have girls working. The story is told in a flashback with Satyaprakash (Jeetendra) reliving his past life in the village as a teacher. Satyaprakash's parents give him the task of looking after his younger brother, Mahesh (Akashdeep), before they die. Shefali (Mumtaz) is a village girl who falls in love with him. Satya is a teacher who honours truth and uses new teaching methods in school for which he continuously gets into trouble with the school Board and the principal (Nana Palsikar). He sends Mahesh to the city to study further in college. However, Mahesh turns out to be a spoilt brat who enjoys drinking and romancing girls. He fails his exams but fools his brother by giving him a wrong roll number. He has fallen in love with Renuka (Vaishali) and when she gets pregnant, he kills her. Satyaprakash is arrested for her murder. With Shefali's help Satya manages to find the real murderer, his brother, and he hands him over to the police.

Chak De! India opens in Delhi during the final minutes of a fictional Hockey World Cup match between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan leading 1–0. When Indian team captain Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is fouled, he takes a penalty stroke. His shot just misses, costing India the match. Soon afterwards, media outlets circulate a photograph of Khan shaking hands with the Pakistani captain. Lala Gulabchand (Dewan Sharar), is a Punjabi and his wife is from Uttar Pradesh. They live at the corner of a crossroads with three lights and four roads. He is a firm believer in national unity and has had five of his six sons, each married to a girl from a different state; a Marathi, Sindhi, Bengali, Tamil and a Gujarati. His sixth son Ramesh (Karan Dewan), works in the press and is a writer and an artist. He is a bachelor but falls in love with a woman named Kokila whose singing he hears on the radio. He draws a portrait of Kokila from imagination just listening to her sing. Unbeknownst to him, Kokila, called Shyama (Sandhya), is the dark-complexioned maid who works in their home and is proficient in all the different languages that the wives of the brothers' speak and very efficient in her chores. However, he rejects her as she's dark and Shyama leaves the house despondent. The turmoil the household goes through with the absence of Shyama and a repentant Ramesh finally makes for a happy ending by everyone getting together again.
