The film is a remake of the 1986 Malayalam film Thalavattam (directed by Priyadarshan himself). The story also draws inspiration from the English novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Synopsis
The film tells the story of a young man named Anand (Salman Khan), who was deeply in love with a girl named Maya (Rimi Sen). He intentionally threw her into a swimming pool, thinking she could swim, for the sake of getting back at her pranks. However, Maya drowned. After her death, Anand's life is completely shattered and he becomes insane.Actors

Twenty years ago Angar Chand (Amrish Puri) lived a wealthy lifestyle in a small town in India along with his wife, Parvati, and four sons, Balram (Jackie Shroff), Kishan (Paresh Rawal), Shakti (Arbaaz Khan) and Jai (Akshaye Khanna). Since Balram is of marriageable age, he arranges his marriage with the daughter of Laxmi Devi (Laxmi), who opposes this marriage. During the wedding ceremony, Laxmi Devi and her sons, Surajbhan, and Pratap forcibly take away their sister and accidentally kill Parvati. They subsequently get their sister married to Kashinath (Shakti Kapoor). An enraged Angar hacks Laxmi's husband to death, is arrested and sentenced to 14 years in prison. When he returns he makes it clear that women will not be permitted in his house, posting a sign on the front gate, and forbids his sons to ever marry.

Champak Chaturvedi (Paresh Rawal) the director of a theatre group, is offered a chance to perform a show in London. Bunty (Akshay Kumar) and Babla (Govinda) are two derps and flirts in his group, always fighting with each other to get the role of the hero. Their behaviour causes the actress (Tanushree Dutta) to run away. This really upsets the organizer, who offered the chance mainly because of the heroine. After reaching London, Champak tells the duo that whoever gets a new actress will get to become hero. Then Babla asks Gullu (Rajpal Yadav), a local driver where he can find a heroine. Jeetu (Shahid Kapoor) is constantly getting himself and his father into trouble because of his inability to properly manage money. Plunging them both into debt, Jeetu breaks off his engagement with his fiance, Pooja (Sushma Reddy) and decides to commit suicide by throwing himself into the sea. Jeetu believes that by killing himself, he can do something right for once: his father can use the money from his life insurance to pay off his debts. Unfortunately, it does not go as planned and Jeetu is found tangled in some nets by a pair of fishermen, Gundya (Paresh Rawal) and Bandya (Rajpal Yadav). Gundya owes money to a Gujarati businessman, Prabhat Singh Chauhan (Om Puri). He reads a note found in Jeetu's pocket, which makes him think Jeetu is rich, rather than in debt. The two fishermen hatch a scheme in which they will offer Jeetu to Prabhat in exchange for the money Gundya owes.

After the death of his dad, Dayashankar Manorilal Pandey (Sunil Shetty) arranges the marriage of his two sisters. In debt, he goes to the city to ask the tenants to leave his house, as he intends to sell it and repay his debts. A Maharashtrian woman, her two daughters, Jyoti, Saraswati (Mahima Chaudhry), and one son, Chotu (Master Aditi) are living there. When Dayashankar asks them to vacate, they refuse. What results is Dayashankar's hilarious attempts to force them to vacate - from seeking legal advice; filing police reports; asking goons to remove them - moving in himself.
