Synopsis
L'action se passe à la fin des années 1970. Après le cambriolage raté d'une épicerie, deux voyous parisiens, Olivier et Roland, cherchent à rentrer dans le droit chemin, au moins "pour essayer". Acceptant de partir travailler dans le marais poitevin pour un petit boulot de représentants, ils débarquent en pleine campagne, nouveaux employés débutants d'un personnage sans aucun scrupule, Castelard, qui exploite la crédulité des paysans les plus pauvres et les plus isolés en allant dans leurs fermes leur vendre des encyclopédies médicales de luxe et bien sûr totalement inutiles "pour seulement l'équivalent de 2 francs par jour, vraiment pas cher" (ce qui signifie, il se garde bien de le dire, environ 700 francs par an, ce qui représentait une fortune à l'époque pour des petits paysans !). Très psychologue, très observateur, et armé d'un solide bagou, il arrive tant bien que mal à vendre quelques exemplaires chaque jour à des paysans n'ayant même pas cet argent pour vivre au jour le jour.Actors

Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a respected but perfectionist actor. Nobody in New York wants to hire him anymore because he is difficult to work with. According to his long-suffering agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack), Michael's attention to detail and difficult reputation led a commercial he worked on to run significantly over-schedule, because the idea of a tomato sitting down was "illogical" to him. In flashbacks, Connie Doyle's (Ricki Lake) early life gives an idea of her mindset. At 18, she meets womanizer Steve DeCunzo (Loren Dean), moves in with him and winds up pregnant. In 1971, a policeman catches Elmo McElroy, a recent college graduate with a degree in pharmacology, smoking marijuana. Because of his arrest and conviction, he is unable to find work as a pharmacologist. In the present day, a drug lord called "the Lizard" calls a meeting of his organisation, hoping to sell a brand new substance invented by Elmo. The meeting goes badly when Elmo, in a bid to escape from the Lizard's control, blows up the building, killing everyone but the Lizard. Vengeful, the Lizard contacts Dakota, a contract killer, who previously killed the only witness in a case against the Lizard.
