Synopsis

Août 1945. La gare d'une commune rurale hongroise. On entend la radio évoquer les bombardements américains de Nagasaki et l'entrée soviétique en Mandchourie. Du train qui arrive, descendent deux hommes en costumes noirs (Péter Rudolf, Bence Tasnádi) : un vénérable juif à la barbe blanche et un jeune homme, son fils peut-être. Ils débarquent aussi deux très grandes caisses. Au village, on prépare activement un mariage. Celui du fils du secrétaire de mairie. Or, l'irruption des deux juifs crée le trouble parmi les habitants. Qui sont-ils ? Que veulent-ils ? Que contiennent les deux coffres qu'ils font transporter dans un chariot ? En réalité, beaucoup de villageois, pris de remords, craignent qu'on leur demande des comptes, voire qu'on tente d'éclaircir leurs actes passés. « Ne disons rien du dénouement, si ce n'est que la noblesse des victimes face à la couardise a rarement donné scène plus émouvante que la cérémonie à laquelle on va assister.

Set in the late 18th century, the story follows the life of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. The film begins where the previous film, The Emigrants ended, with Karl Oskar bringing Kristina and their three small children, Johan, Marta and Harald, along with Karl Oskar's brother Robert, Robert's friend Arvid, through the woods to the land he claimed at Lake Ki Chi Saga. Upon their arrival, Karl Oskar leads them to a small shanty he found on the land, telling them it will provide them shelter until he can build them a farmhouse, and he points out to Kristina how fertile the topsoil is. With three small children and Kristina expecting another child, Karl Oskar pours all their resources into building them a house before winter arrives. He begins clearing the land of the tall pine trees, and with the help of Robert, Arvid and some of their Swedish neighbors, construct for them a small farmhouse.
