Synopsis
A young man (Philippe Noiret) arrives at a train station to see his wife. After four years of marriage the couple are having problems of a somewhat existential nature--the wife loves her husband, but is thinking of leaving him (he had an affair some time back, but her problem is not jealousy so much as questioning the very nature of love itself). The couple discuss their lives, and become resigned to the fact that they belong together, even if their love has changed. They return to Paris, the wife now better understanding her husband's nature because she's seen his hometown. As this drama unfolds, we see the lives of the poor but proud people living there; fishermen wanting to harvest shellfish from a small lagoon they have been forbidden to use because of an alleged problem with bacteria, a small child dies of an unknown illness, a young man wins the right to court the 16-year-old daughter of a neighbor, after proving himself in a local aquatic jousting tournament.Actors

The film begins with the contorted body of the woman, covered in frost. From this image, an unseen and unheard interviewer (the voice of Varda herself) puts the camera on the last men to see her and the ones who found her. The action then flashes back to the woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) walking along the roadside, hiding from the police and trying to get a ride. Along her journey she meets and takes up with other vagabonds such as herself as well as a Tunisian vineyard worker, a family of goat farmers, a professor researching trees, and a maid who envies what she perceives to be a beautiful and passionate lifestyle. Mona explains to one of her temporary companions that at one time she had an office job in Paris and did very well for herself, but she became unsettled with the way she was living – choosing instead to wander the country free from any responsibility, picking up what she could to survive as she goes. Throughout the film, Mona's condition seems to become progressively worse until she finally falls where we first saw her, frozen and entrenched in her misery in a ditch.

La Cérémonie tells the story of a young woman, Sophie Bonhomme (Sandrine Bonnaire), who is hired as a maid by the Lelièvre family. The Lelièvres live in an isolated mansion in Brittany. The family consists of four members: Catherine (Jacqueline Bisset) and Georges, the parents, who have no children together, but one each from previous marriages. Gilles is Catherine's and her ex-husband's son. He is a lonely teenager who loves reading and has a passion for arts in general. Melinda is Georges' and his late wife's daughter. She studies at a university and only spends the weekends at home, where she invites her boyfriend Jérémie. The household chores are excessive for Catherine – who owns her own art gallery – so she requires a maid's help and hires Sophie. Throughout the film Sophie avoids using the dishwasher, refuses to take driving lessons, buys fake eyeglasses, and has trouble giving a cashier the correct change. The viewer finds out later that Sophie is illiterate and has a history of violence since she is believed to have killed her handicapped father, or at least not to have rescued him from the fire she might have set in his house.

Born on the day of the death of renowned composer Giuseppe Verdi—27 January 1901—Alfredo Berlinghieri and Olmo Dalcò come from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Klim Yarko rentre en Ukraine par le train après son service militaire effectué dans une unité blindée. Il avoue aux camarades qui voyagent avec lui ne pas savoir où s'installer, car sans famille il n'est attendu par personne. Il a toutefois une idée. Dans une gazette, il est tombé sur la photo de Mariana Bajan qui dirige une brigade de tractoristes dans un kolkhoze. Il se rend donc à ce kolkhoze à la tombée de la nuit. En chemin, il découvre Mariana qui vient de faire une chute de moto. Il lui porte secours et rentre avec elle au village. Les jeunes gens sympathisent. Klim en tant que bon mécanicien est très bien accueilli par le directeur du kolkhoze Kirill Petrovitch. Toutefois il ne sait pas que, pour repousser les prétendants à son cœur, Mariana avait demandé à l'un des kolkhoziens, un certain Nazar Douma, de se présenter comme son fiancé. Celui-ci prend son rôle très au sérieux et, un matin, essaye de chasser Klim comme les autres. Klim décide de partir, mais à la suite d'un concours de circonstances il devient brigadier de l'unité concurrente de Mariana et chef de Nazar. Nazar n'est pas bien noté par Kirill Petrovitch qui demande à Klim d'améliorer la discipline et le rendement de sa brigade, pour que le fiancé de Mariana devienne un kolkhozien modèle digne de la main de leur meilleure travailleuse. Klim réussit cette mission, mais alors que Kirill Petrovitch évoque dans son bureau la préparation du mariage, il envoie valser les meubles et se met à hurler que ni Nazar ni aucun autre ne se mettra entre lui et sa bien-aimée. Kirill Petrovitch n'en paraît nullement perturbé, il est prêt à donner sa bénédiction à tous les amoureux pourvu qu'ils soient de parfaits tractoristes. Le film se termine par la scène du grand mariage où tout le monde chante des chansons patriotiques et lève son verre vers le portrait du camarade Staline.

The film depicts a couple, down on their luck during the Great Depression, who move to a farm to try to make a go of living off the land. They don't have a clue at first, but soon find other people down on their luck to help them. Soon they have a collective of people, some from the big city, who work together on a farm. There is a severe drought, killing the crops. The people then dig a ditch by hand almost two miles long to divert water from a creek to irrigate the crops. The film is an entertaining, uplifting political allegory about the virtues of collective, non-corporate action, self-sufficiency, and the rewards of hard-work rather than the rewards of rapacious finance capitalism; it is not an instructional "how-to" film from an agricultural institute; consequently, the film ends with the people celebrating wildly in the water then harvesting the crops, not showing how they managed to direct the narrow stream of water over the huge plain to evenly irrigate the crops.
