La route mène au Tibet (Cesta vede do Tibetu) est un film documentaire tchécoslovaco-chinois tourné en 1954 au Tibet par le réalisateur Vladimír Sís et le cameraman Josef Vaniš . Primé aux festivals de Venise et de Karlovy Vary en 1955, il fut censuré en Tchécoslovaquie à la fin des années 1950 par le régime communiste. Une version numérique du film est montré au cinéma Lucerna à Prague en présence du fils de Vladimír Sís.
Cette version est la seule des trois versions officielles du film découvert dans les archives nationales du film par Viktor Kuna, le distributeur du film.
Le film illustre la construction de la route du Sichuan à Lhassa en haute montagne, alors que le Tibet était déjà occupé par la Chine. Alors que des monastères bouddhistes commençaient à être détruits par des soldats chinois, le film montre certains monastères. Le film aborde aussi les difficultés des conditions de vie des Tibétains ainsi qu'une rencontre avec le dalaï-lama. Ce qui rend le film unique, selon Viktor Kuna, c'est qu'il capture de nombreux endroits qui ont été détruits pendant la révolution culturelle.

The film opens in 1938. Dominic Matei (Tim Roth), is a 70-year-old professor of linguistics. On the eve of World War II, Dominic attempts to visit the Café Select but is denied access due to wearing his pyjamas. Dominic realises that he is getting no younger, and has essentially failed his aim in life – to fully discover the origin of human language. His tireless labours have condemned him to a solitary existence, often spent pining after Laura (Alexandra Maria Lara), the love of his youth. Intent on committing suicide, Dominic travels to Bucharest, the city where he and Laura met at university. He is struck by lightning. In hospital, he is initially diagnosed by Professor Stanciulescu (Bruno Ganz) to be dying of his burns. However, Stanciulescu is startled when his patient regenerates into a much younger man. The Professor helps Dominic out of the hospital so as to continue studying him. Shortly afterwards, Romania is occupied by the Nazis, whose interests are aroused by Stanciulescu’s miracle patient.

Karma, a young Tibetan woman from New York City comes to Dharamsala, the exile headquarters of the Dalai Lama in India, in search of her roots. She is making a documentary film about former political prisoners who have escaped from Tibet. One of her interviewees is the recently arrived Dhondup. He reveals to her that his dying mother had made him promise to deliver an old charm box to an exile Tibetan named Loga, and appeals to her for help in locating the man.

Milarépa naquit au Tibet, au XI siècle, au sein d’une famille de riches marchands. À sa mort, son père confie l'héritage de la famille à son frère jusqu’à l'entrée de Milarépa dans la vie adulte. Pourtant, l’oncle s’approprie l'héritage et exploite la mère et la jeune sœur de Milarépa. Désespérée, sa mère veut se venger de cette injustice. Elle vend son dernier champ, et envoie Milarépa auprès de Yongten Trogyal, un maître de magie noire. Il jette un sortilège et détruit une partie du village, tuant environ 30 personnes. La foule en colère le poursuit. Milarépa trouve refuge auprès d’un moine, et tandis que sa mère se rejouit de la vengeance accomplie, il est rongé par le remords. C’est alors qu’il reçoit un conseil qui changera sa vie : « Les ennemis naissent de ton esprit; Pour les vaincre, cesse les actions négatives, Cultive les actions positives, et Maîtrise ton esprit ».

Alors que la Coupe du monde de football 1998 est disputée en France, Palden et Nyima, deux jeunes tibétains ayant fui leur pays arrivent dans un monastère bouddhiste au nord de l'Inde. Ils y reçoivent leur ordination à la vie monastique, mais celle-ci va rapidement laisser place à la passion du football. Palden se retrouve entraîné par Orgyen, son camarade de chambre, à regarder la nuit le match des quarts de finale dans le village voisin. Sur le chemin du retour, ils sont pris sur le fait par le geko, le maître de discipline du monastère, qui les punit. Avec l’approche de la finale, Orgyen réussit, non sans peine, à autoriser la diffusion de la finale de la Coupe du Monde au monastère. Ne possédant cependant pas de télévision, une course contre la montre commence afin de récolter assez d’argent pour en louer une. Après de nombreux obstacles, les résidents du monastère réussissent finalement par regarder la finale France-Brésil tous ensemble.
