Synopsis
Écosse, 1865. Susan Blackhouse, 20 ans, est la dernière représentante d'une noble lignée. Elle en est l'héritière avec son vieil oncle, Sir Neville. Alors qu'elle est courtisée par un nobliau moins riche qu'elle, Sir Harold Morgan, elle lui préfère Pierre Brissac, un architecte français, dont elle est amoureuse. Un amour est réciproque mais il doit repartir en France. Il lui promet de l'épouser lorsqu'il sera de retour.Actors

Baron von Rhoneberg (Jean Servais), a former World War II German general, sacrificed his daughter as the war ended. This condemned his family to be placed under a terrible curse. Many years later, he tells the story to a reporter who wishes to write an article about it and take pictures of his castle. However, the Baron is against any photographs. Despite his protests, the young woman goes up to visit the castle and take pictures but is killed when a dry thunderstorm suddenly rolls in while she is in close proximity to it. Her body is taken back to the town where it is discovered she has a burn in the shape of a lobster-like claw on her arm which is confirmed as the Mark of the Devil.

Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller), a scientist experimenting with the possibility of regenerating blood through electricity has his home and laboratory in the castle owned by his wife Muriel (Barbara Steele). One of the more prominent works of Italy's premier horror stylist Mario Bava, this occult murder mystery interweaves elements of the traditional giallo thriller formula with an unusual Gothic ghost story. In a turn-of-the-century Carpathian village a series of murders are occurring in which the victims are found with silver coins embedded in their hearts. The coins are revealed to be talismans placed on the victims by the town witch (Fabienne Dali), meant to ward off the supernatural powers of the aged Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi). The baroness has been performing these duties for the ghost of her murdered daughter, who wants to claim the villagers' souls. In order to free the village from the curse, Dali must find the sequestered baroness and destroy her.

A group of individuals including the writer Rick (Walter Bigari), Daniel Parks (Alfredo Rizzo) his publisher, and his secretary, Edith (Luisa Baratto), their a photographer Dermott (Ralph Zucker) and five young models enter a seemingly deserted castle to take photos for a horror photonovel. The castle is actually occupied by a former actor Travis Anderson (Mickey Hargitay). Anderson initially desires to send the group away, but recognizes Edith who was once his fiancée and changes his mind but places the dungeon as off limits for the group. The group ignores this warning and proceed to take photos there. This angers Anderson, who dons a costume and takes the identity of the Crimson Executioner who was hanged centuries earlier for the crime of having his own private torture chamber. Anderson eventually kills each member of the group until Edith and Rick remain. Anderson succombs to his own torture devices and is killed by the poisoned barbs on the "Lover-of-Death" machine. Edith and Rick then escape with their lives.

Emma and Marc, two young lovers, move into a house which has been uninhabited for thirty years. Dr. John Markway narrates the history of the 90-year-old Hill House, which was constructed by Hugh Crain as a home for his wife. She died when her carriage crashed against a tree as she approached the house for the first time. Crain remarried, but his second wife died in the house from a fall down the stairs. Crain's daughter Abigail lived in the house for the rest of her life, never moving out of the nursery. She died calling for her nurse-companion. The companion inherited the house, but later hanged herself from a spiral staircase in the library. Hill House was eventually inherited by a Mrs. Sanderson, although it has stood empty for some time.
