The movie is set in and around Sichem in 1901. Louis Verheyden, 11 years old, lives with his parents and two brothers on a farm. His mother is a complaining woman. Father works at the farm of landowner Coene. He is mostly only home during dinner. He is a rather aggressive man and beats Louis frequently. Furthermore Louis is bullied by his brothers Nis and Heinke.

Following World War II, the widow Antonia and her daughter Danielle arrive at Antonia's home town where her mother is dying. Antonia turns down an offer of marriage from Farmer Bas, but develops a romance with him anyway. Danielle becomes an artist and expresses interest in raising a child, while rejecting the idea of having a husband. Antonia and Danielle visit the city to find a man to impregnate Danielle, resulting in the birth of Therèse, an unusually intelligent girl. Un cultivateur, Jan Braems, tire un bon numéro qui lui permet d'échapper à la conscription. Mais il accepte de céder ce bon numéro au fils d'un bourgeois qui a eu moins de chance en échange d'une somme d'argent. Celle-ci lui est volée une nuit alors qu'il se trouve à la caserne. Lors de son service militaire, il contracte également une maladie qui le rend aveugle après s'être lavé les yeux avec son urine. Sa fiancée, Katrien, vient le chercher à Venlo pour le ramener chez eux, à Zoersel, près de Westmalle.
