It was 1920 in the southwest West Virginia coal fields, and, as the narrator recalls, "things were tough." In response to efforts by miners to organize into a labor union, the Stone Mountain Coal Company announces it will cut the pay miners receive, and will be importing replacement workers into town to replace those who join the union. The new workers are African Americans from Alabama and are coming in on the train, but the train is stopped outside town and the black men are told to get off. Derided as "scabs", they are then attacked by the local miners, but manage to get back on the train and continue their journey.

Four peasant families working farms for the same landlord scrape out a meager existence in 1898 in the campaign around Bergamo. Over the course of a year, children are born, crops are planted, animals are slaughtered, couples are married, stories and prayers are exchanged in the families's shared farmhouse. Undercurrents of revolution are seen by the peasants but largely ignored, as a communist rabble-rouser gives a speech at a local fair and when a newlywed couple visit the big city of Milan and witness the arrest of political prisoners. When spring comes, one of the four families is forced off their land by the incensed landlord, and the remaining families watch them go, praying for them and recognizing their own fragile existence.

The doctor takes an interest in Mary, confiding in her and she in him; specifically she tells him of abuse she suffered at her father's hands. After Mary and the Doctor spend a considerable time talking one morning as she brings him his breakfast; the head of the household staff, Mr Poole challenges Mary's story that the two of them were discussing the planting a garden, thinking that she lied. Upon being discreetly questioned by Poole, the doctor deftly covers for Mary and says that the garden they talked about is "the very thing" needed in the house. However, the household is thrown into turmoil when the master announces he will be getting an assistant. The staff speculate on his employment and origins, as he is never fully seen and remains a mystery.
