Lord Jim is a 1925 silent film starring Percy Marmont (in the title role), Noah Beery, and Duke Kahanamoku. The movie was directed by Victor Fleming and based on the novel Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. A print is preserved at the Library of Congress and at UCLA Film and TV.

Synopsis

Ayant déserté son navire lors d'un naufrage, un marin, incapable de retrouver du travail, se lie à un propriétaire qui fait le commerce des esclaves. Il tombe amoureux de la fille de ce dernier et gravit peu à peu les marches jusqu'à devenir chef du village local…

A Solomon Islands plantation owner, David Sheldon (Tom Moore) becomes ill from blackwater fever following the death of many of his fieldhands from the disease. Joan Lackland (Pauline Starke), a female soldier of fortune, arrives by schooner in the islands. Enlisting the aid of her Kanaka crew, she defends Sheldon from an attack by the natives, led by Googomy (Noble Johnson). Joan becomes David's business partner after nursing him back to health and helps protect his mortgaged property from two greedy moneylenders. In attempting to gain revenge, the moneylenders incite the natives to revolt.

Dr. Jekyll (Spencer Tracy) believes good and evil exist in everyone. Experiments reveal his evil side, named Mr. Hyde. Experience teaches him how evil Hyde can be: he rapes Ivy Pearson (Ingrid Bergman), who earlier expressed interest in Jekyll. Meanwhile, Jekyll is preparing to marry Beatrix Emery (Lana Turner). Over the course of the film, Hyde abuses Ivy. Feeling remorse over the treatment inflicted on Ivy, Jekyll vows to never take the serum again, destroys the key to his lab, and sends money to Ivy anonymously. Ivy believes the money was sent by Hyde in order to trick her into believing she is now free. On the advice of a friend over her rattled nerves, she goes to Jekyll for comfort. Jekyll promises that Hyde will never hurt her again.

Glenn Kilbourne (Richard Dix) returns from the war and travels to Arizona to regain his health. There he is nursed back to health by an Arizona girl, Flo Hutter (Marjorie Daw). Kilbourne's fiancée, Carley Burch (Lois Wilson), arrives in Arizona but soon becomes disillusioned with life in the West and returns to New York. Sometime later, Flo is seriously injured in an accident. Wanting to repay her for restoring him back to health, Glenn asks her to marry him. On their wedding day, Carley returns to Arizona from New York looking for Glenn. When Flo sees that Glenn and Carley are still in love, she calls off her wedding to Glenn and marries another admirer, Lee Stanton (Leonard Clapham).
