Add to a movie listLove Me Tonight is a 1932 American Pre-Code musical comedy film produced and directed by Rouben Mamoulian, with music by Rodgers and Hart. It stars Maurice Chevalier as a tailor who poses as a nobleman and Jeanette MacDonald as a princess with whom he falls in love. It also stars Charles Ruggles as a penniless nobleman, along with Charles Butterworth and Myrna Loy as members of his family.
The film is an adaptation by Samuel Hoffenstein, George Marion Jr. and Waldemar Young of the play by Paul Armont and Léopold Marchand. It features the classic Rodgers and Hart songs "Love Me Tonight", "Isn't it Romantic?", "Mimi", and "Lover". "Lover" is sung not romantically, as it often is in nightclubs, but comically, as MacDonald's character tries to control an unruly horse. The staging of "Isn't It Romantic?" was revolutionary for its time, combining both singing and film editing, as the song is passed from one singer (or group of singers) to another, all of whom are at different locales.
In 1990, Love Me Tonight was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Synopsis
The story describes an encounter between a Parisian tailor named Maurice Courtelin (Chevalier) and a family of local aristocrats. These include Vicomte Gilbert de Varèze (Ruggles), who owes Maurice a large amount of money for tailoring work; Gilbert's uncle the Duc d'Artelines (C. Aubrey Smith), the family patriarch; d'Artelines' man-hungry niece Valentine (Loy); and his other 22-year-old niece, Princesse Jeanette (MacDonald), who has been a widow for three years. D'Artelines has been unable to find Jeanette a new husband of suitable age and rank. The household also includes three aunts and an ineffectual suitor the Comte de Savignac (Butterworth).Actors

In Vienna, Lieutenant Nikolaus "Niki" von Preyn (Maurice Chevalier) meets Franzi (Claudette Colbert), the leader of an all-female-orchestra. They soon fall in love with each other. While standing in formation before a parade honoring the visiting royal family of Flausenthurm, Niki takes the opportunity to wink at Franzi in the crowd. Unfortunately the gesture is intercepted by Anna, the Princess of Flausenthurm (Miriam Hopkins). The naive Princess assumes offense, leading the lieutenant to convince her that he slighted her because she is thought to be very beautiful. Besotted, the Princess demands she has to marry the lieutenant, or, she'll marry an American instead. The international incident is narrowly averted by having them get married.

Lily une jeune paysanne vient de perdre son père, elle est recueillie par sa tante, Madame Rasmussen, libraire à Berlin, une femme autoritaire, rigide et légèrement portée sur l'alcool. De la fenêtre de sa chambre Lily aperçoit un atelier de sculpteur qui la fascine. Un jour, Richard le sculpteur entre dans la librairie et semble captivé par le corps de Lily, il la persuade de venir poser pour elle. Acceptant après avoir hésité, Lily déjouant la surveillance de sa tante se rend chez Richard qui la convainc de se déshabiller pour prendre la pose. Bientôt une très belle sculpture prend forme et les deux jeunes gens entament une idylle. Survient alors le baron von Merzbach qui est un client de Richard et qui tombe en admiration devant la statue, il demande à être présenté à Lily. Quelque temps plus tard, le baron persuade Richard qu'avec ce dernier, Lily n'aura aucun avenir, alors qu'avec lui, elle aura la reconnaissance, la fortune, le titre…par lâcheté Richard accepte. Le soir alors que Lily s'apprête à se rendre chez Richard, Madame Rasmussen la surprend et la chasse de son domicile. Elle se rend chez Richard, mais celui-ci a disparu, et c'est alors le baron von Merzbach qui l'accueille à sa place en lui apprenant que Richard est parti en voyage. Le baron-ci lui propose le mariage, désorientée et choquée, Lily accepte. Elle fait son éducation dans le grand monde, apprend la musique, le français, la danse mais n'est pas heureuse. Von Prell le palefrenier du baron s'éprend d'elle et lui déclare sa flemme pendant une leçon d'équitation, Lily le rabroue.
