Add to a movie listGolden Boy is a 1939 black-and-white Columbia Pictures drama film based on the Clifford Odets play of the same name. It features William Holden in his film debut, the role that made him a star: a promising violinist who wants to be a boxer. Barbara Stanwyck plays his love interest. The supporting cast included Lee J. Cobb (in an unusual role as the bewhiskered Italian immigrant father of Holden's character) and Adolphe Menjou.
The producers were initially unhappy with Holden's work and tried to dismiss him, but Stanwyck insisted that he be retained. Thirty-nine years later, when Holden and Stanwyck were joint presenters at the 1978 Academy Awards, he interrupted their reading of a nominee list to publicly thank her for saving his career.
Victor Young was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
On 7 January 1940, Stanwyck performed a parody of Golden Boy on The Jack Benny Program.

Lily une jeune paysanne vient de perdre son père, elle est recueillie par sa tante, Madame Rasmussen, libraire à Berlin, une femme autoritaire, rigide et légèrement portée sur l'alcool. De la fenêtre de sa chambre Lily aperçoit un atelier de sculpteur qui la fascine. Un jour, Richard le sculpteur entre dans la librairie et semble captivé par le corps de Lily, il la persuade de venir poser pour elle. Acceptant après avoir hésité, Lily déjouant la surveillance de sa tante se rend chez Richard qui la convainc de se déshabiller pour prendre la pose. Bientôt une très belle sculpture prend forme et les deux jeunes gens entament une idylle. Survient alors le baron von Merzbach qui est un client de Richard et qui tombe en admiration devant la statue, il demande à être présenté à Lily. Quelque temps plus tard, le baron persuade Richard qu'avec ce dernier, Lily n'aura aucun avenir, alors qu'avec lui, elle aura la reconnaissance, la fortune, le titre…par lâcheté Richard accepte. Le soir alors que Lily s'apprête à se rendre chez Richard, Madame Rasmussen la surprend et la chasse de son domicile. Elle se rend chez Richard, mais celui-ci a disparu, et c'est alors le baron von Merzbach qui l'accueille à sa place en lui apprenant que Richard est parti en voyage. Le baron-ci lui propose le mariage, désorientée et choquée, Lily accepte. Elle fait son éducation dans le grand monde, apprend la musique, le français, la danse mais n'est pas heureuse. Von Prell le palefrenier du baron s'éprend d'elle et lui déclare sa flemme pendant une leçon d'équitation, Lily le rabroue.

The story describes an encounter between a Parisian tailor named Maurice Courtelin (Chevalier) and a family of local aristocrats. Racing driver Mike Brannan (Clark Gable), has a reputation for doing whatever it takes to win. Powerful nationwide columnist Regina Forbes (Barbara Stanwyck) decides to interview Brannan just before a race, and becomes annoyed when he is rather brusque with her. Brannan and popular competitor Joe Youghal fight for the lead. When a car they are about to lap crashes in front of them, Brannan safely drives around it on the inside, forcing Youghal to try to go outside. In her column the next day, Regina blames Brannan for Youghal's death and brings up a prior racing fatality involving him. As a result, he is barred by nervous racing circuit managers anxious to avoid bad publicity.

Aspiring artist Jerry Strong (Ralph Graves), the son of a wealthy railroad tycoon, sneaks out of a party he allowed his friend Bill Standish (Lowell Sherman) to hold at his New York penthouse apartment and studio. While out driving in the country, Jerry meets self-described "party girl" Kay Arnold (Barbara Stanwyck), who is escaping from another party aboard a yacht, and gives her a ride back to the city. He sees something in her and offers her a job as his model for a painting titled "Hope". In their first session, Jerry wipes off her makeup to try to bring out her true nature. Perpetual partier and drunkard Standish thinks Kay looks fine just the way she is and invites her on a cruise to Havana. She declines his offer.
