Lovely Mary is a 1916 silent drama film directed by Edgar Jones.

Synopsis

Mary and her cousin Clairborne are the last descendants of the Lane family who announce they are selling their land. Two land scouts come over to buy their property. One of them, Roland Manning, falls in love with Mary. The other, Wade Dempster, tries to get his hand on their home by getting Clairborne drunk. One of the townsfolk finds out of Dempster's way of buying the land and tries to stop it. Dempster defends himself by shooting him and next blames Manning for the murder. It doesn't take long before Manning is found guilty and receives a life prison sentence.

Julia Deep is a young woman working behind the exchange desk at a department store. She usually serves as the clerk of wealthy and eccentric widows, such as Mrs. Lowe. She feels very lonely in the big city, until she notices books in the apartment of the star lodger in the building she lives in. The lodger, Terry Hartridge is the son of a wealthy man who is using his father's fortune to blaze a trail across the white lights of the city. He is spending his money carelessly and doesn't put any time in paying the bills, much to the dislike of the department store owner Timothy Black. These bills are delivered by the nobly Lottie Driscoll of the Robin Stock Company.

Based upon a review in a film magazine, Geoffrey Challoner (Chase) finds his bride of a few days Robin (Minter) burning some letters, and he becomes insanely jealous. A few days later, Norman Craig (Garwood) blunders into the Challoner apartment and Robin fires a gun, thinking him to be a burglar. Norman faints from fright and Robin flees, thinking that she killed him. Geoffrey finds Norman in his wife's rooms and decides upon divorce. Before the case goes to trial, Geoffrey makes the same mistake and blunders into Mrs. Craigs's (Shelby) room. A real burglar shows up to complicate the situation. In the end, it turns out that the letters Robin had been burning were from her husband Geoffrey.

The film's subject matter deals with mysticism and reincarnation. Based upon a summary in a film publication, Nora O'Hallahan (Minter) comes to America only to find her mother dead. The Irish girl takes a position as the nurse for the Heath's child. Alice Heath (Minter) is killed and, after almost losing himself through his grief, the artist husband Roger (Holt) receives inspiration through Nora, who has grown marvelously like the dead wife through her love for the child. Nora's belief in the return of spirits is responsible for saving the child's life, while the artist feels that Alice has returned to him in the form of Nora, and he makes her his wife.

As described in a film magazine review, Periwinkle (Minter), the survivor of a shipwreck, has been reared by Ann Scudder (Schaefer). They live on the sea coast and Periwinkle helps the coast guards during times of wrecks. One night Richard Langdon Evans (Fisher), the sole survivor when his yacht is wrecked, is tossed upon the shore. He is found by Periwinkle and taken to the guard house where, nursed under the care of Periwinkle, he soon recovers. Langdon falls in love with Periwinkle. However, the day comes when he must leave, and Periwinkle is broken hearted when she finds that he is engaged to another. Ann, suspecting that Periwinkle loves Langdon, learns the address of Langdon's fiancee and writes a letter to her. Ann receives a telegram stating to the effect that the fiancee has already married. Ann gives the telegram to Landon, who then tells Periwinkle that he loves her and does not have to leave. They have a simple marriage.
