Lucía is a 1968 Cuban black-and-white drama film directed by Humberto Solás, and written by Julio García Espinosa and Nelson Rodríguez. It was the winner of the Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival in 1969.
The film is a period piece, told in three stories in different moments of Cuban history (the Cuban war of independence, the 1930s and the 1960s), all as seen through the eyes of a different woman, each named Lucía.
Synopsis
Trois destins de femmes cubaines aux prénoms identiques, à trois périodes historiques distinctes, ou l'évolution de la condition féminine dans la plus grande île des Antilles. La première Lucía, issue d'une famille de la bourgeoisie coloniale, s'éprend d'un bel Espagnol, déjà marié dans son pays. En découvrant cette réalité, celle-ci en perd la raison. Nous sommes au moment de la guerre d'indépendance contre l'Espagne (1895). La deuxième Lucía (cette fois de classe moyenne) s'engage aux côtés d'un révolutionnaire dans le combat contre la dictature de Gerardo Machado (1932). Dernière partie du triptyque : durant les premières années de la Révolution cubaine, Lucía est cette fois-ci une ouvrière agricole souffrant du machisme de son conjoint dans une société socialiste défendant officiellement l'égalité des sexes.Actors

La Havane, à la fin des années 1970. Teresa, mère de trois enfants, est chef d'équipe dans une usine textile. Elle est également déléguée syndicale et médiatrice culturelle. La tradition a toujours été respectée dans ce petit village du Gujarat, surtout par les femmes qui ne remettent pas en cause l'organisation patriarcale, voire franchement phallocrate, de cette société rurale. Rani, jeune veuve, négocie, avec son amie Lajjo, le mariage de son fils Gulab avec une jeune adolescente, Janaki. L'affaire est conclue. Quand les deux femmes reviennent à leur village, un conseil est réuni pour décider l'avenir d'une jeune fille qui fuit sa belle-famille parce que son mari la délaisse et que les autres hommes de la belle-famille abusent d'elle. Mais les anciens ne sauraient tolérer une telle infamie : il renvoie la jeune fille à son sort. Rani tente vainement, mais mollement de protester. Rani, Lajjo, questionnées, aiguillonnées par leur amie Bijli, prostituée et danseuse d'une sorte de cabaret, commencent à remettre en cause cet ordre moral qui interdit l'éducation et l'indépendance aux femmes. Le film se termine par la crémation symbolique du démon Rāvaṇa lors de la nuit de Dussehra commémorant la libération de Sītā par son époux Rāma, nuit au cours de laquelle périt par le feu Manoj, le mari alcoolique et violent de Lajjo. Puis les trois femmes partent sur le triporteur bariolé du cabaret, libres et sans but.

In 1953, Katherine Ann Watson (Julia Roberts), a 30-year-old graduate student in the department of Art History at Oakland State, takes a position teaching "History of Art" at Wellesley College, a conservative women's private liberal arts college in Massachusetts, because she wants to make a difference and influence the next generation of women. At her first class, Katherine discovers that the girls have already memorized the entire syllabus from the textbook, so she instead uses the classes to introduce them to Modern Art and encourages spirited classroom discussions about topics such as what makes good art and what the Mona Lisa's smile means. This brings her into conflict with the conservative college president (Marian Seldes), who warns Katherine to stick to the syllabus if she wants to keep her job. Katherine comes to know many of the students in her class well and seeks to inspire them to achieve more for themselves as intelligent women than the expected convention of marriage to eligible young men. Joan Brandwyn (Julia Stiles) dreams of being a lawyer and has enrolled as pre-law, so Katherine encourages her to apply to Yale Law School, where she is accepted; Katherine finds her liberal sensibilities affronted when Joan's fiancé Tommy (Topher Grace) comments Joan "will always have that", intimating his own expectations of what his wife should be. Joan eventually elopes with Tommy, and professes to Katherine she is very happy—she had decided that what she wants most is to be a wife and mother after graduation and asks Katherine to respect her choice.
