Synopsis
Sue Ann vit seule dans une petite ville de l’Ohio. Un jour, Maggie, une adolescente ayant récemment emménagé dans le coin, lui demande un petit service. Maggie et ses amis, ne pouvant pas acheter d'alcool, demandent à Sue Ann d'en acheter à leur place. Cette dernière y voit donc la possibilité de côtoyer du monde et surtout des personnes plus jeunes qu’elle. Sue Ann propose même aux adolescents de venir boire dans son sous-sol aménagé. Cependant, Sue Ann impose ses règles : pas de blasphème, celui qui conduit ne boit pas, ne jamais monter dans sa maison et enfin il faut l’appeler « Ma ». L'hospitalité de Ma va toutefois virer à l’obsession. Le sous-sol au départ si accueillant pour les adolescents va alors devenir le pire endroit sur Terre.Actors

Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) is a lawyer in the quiet town of New Essex, North Carolina. Max Cady (Robert De Niro) is a former client whom Bowden defended 14 years earlier when he was working as a public defender in Atlanta. Cady was being tried for the violent rape and battery of a young woman. Bowden, appalled by Cady's crime, buried crucial evidence about the victim—that she was promiscuous—which might have lightened Cady's sentence or even secured his acquittal, violating his ethical and professional duty as a defense attorney. Cady was illiterate at the time and unaware of Bowden's actions. After his release from prison, Cady tracks down Bowden. The former convict learned to read and studied law in prison, and even assumed his own defense, unsuccessfully appealing his conviction several times. Cady hints strongly that he has learned about Bowden burying the report, stating that the judge and prosecutor in his case did their jobs while Bowden betrayed his own client.

The film follows Jane (Lewis) who has inherited a rent-controlled brownstone apartment from her late aunt, and, despite her boyfriend Greg's (Hurt) appeals, has decided to move in and live on her own for the first time. She meets Martha Stewart, (Duvall) her neighbor from the first floor, who tells her the names of all the occupants of the building, including the person who lives on the 4th floor, an old woman named Alice who is a hermit. The next morning, she finds a note on her door, warning her against the noise she was making while moving in. Jane quickly dismisses it and continues moving around her furniture. Another note appears and she calls a locksmith after someone tampered with her locks. The locksmith (Bell) is a strange man who lives in the building across from Jane, whom she suspected of harming a woman earlier.
