Adhering to its title 'Cinema Paithiyam', the movie depicts and traces the life and transformation of Jaya (Jayachitra) from the reel world to the real world. So obsessed is she with movies and the movie world, that she worships the popular film hero Jai Shankar, believing all that he portrays on screen, to be his real self. He becomes the ideal man of her dreams, and she even tattoos his name in her arm. Hell breaks loose when she refuses to marry the boy Natarajan (Kamalhaasan) arranged by her brother and her sister-in-law. At his juncture, steps in her Uncle, who takes it upon himself to show her the true world, by taking her on a trip around the real life of a star.

Jaishankar who plays the part of college professor was being accused by three girls, Srividya, Vijayalalitha and Jayakumari out of which two are his students and a third who is his landlord's daughter, for different reasons but with the same note that he has sexually harassed them, just before his marriage. The recently dismissed police commissioner of Chennai, Inspector General Raghavan Maraar (Mohanlal), describes in a voice-over about his sudden termination due to a common man who walked into his life. An unnamed man (Kamal Haasan) is shown strategically placing a travel bag in a train in the Chennai Central railway station and in a shopping mall. He proceeds to place another bag, under the false pretense of lodging an FIR, in the toilet of a police station in Anna Salai, Chennai.
