Sedapatti Suryanarayana Devar Rajendran, commonly known by his stage name S. S. Rajendran (SSR), (Tamil: எஸ். எஸ். ராஜேந்திரன்; January 1928 – 24 October 2014) was an Indian film actor, director, producer and politician. In acting, he was noted for his attractive personality and correct and clear pronunciation of Tamil words. He died at the age of 86 in Chennai.

Rishi (Sarathkumar) is a professional thief working for Satya (Arun Pandiyan). On one of his missions, he happens to watch a minister (Devan) kill a television reporter who is about to expose him. Rishi takes off with a floppy the reporter hands to him before dying and the minister, naturally, wants it back. Things get confusing because of Velu (Sarathkumar), who looks like Rishi and gets into trouble. .Meanwhile, Rishi turns over a new leaf when one of his tasks ends up in a singer Nandhini (Sangavi) being blinded. Relates the true meaning of friendship between two youths, Raghu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Ravi (S. S. Rajendran). Ravi leaves his hometown in Tamil Nadu and comes to Amritsar. Here, Raghu finds him in an unconscious state and takes him home. Raghu sacrifices his managerial post and gives it to Ravi. Ravi, however, does not reveal his true identity and the real reason for leaving home. As per his parents wish, Ragu sees a girl to marry. However, when Ravi sees the photograph of the girl, he asks Rghu not to marry her. A shocking truth about the girl is then revealed to Raghu.

Kovalan, the son of a wealthy merchant in Kaveripattinam, married Kannagi, the lovely daughter of another merchant. With these as their capital they went to the great city of Madurai, where Kovalan hoped to recoup his fortunes by trade.
