Pepi cultive de la marijuana sur son balcon. Un flic qui habite en face, le remarque et vient chez elle pour le lui reprocher. Son regard est concupiscent si bien qu'elle soulève sa robe et lui propose de faire l'amour en échange de son silence. Le flic accepte. Elle lui précise toutefois qu'il doit passer par «derrière», ne voulant pas perdre sa virginité, qu'elle voulait monnayer pour 60 000 ptas, comme on l'apprendra plus tard. Le policier refuse et la pénètre. Il réalise en entendant ses cris que Pepi était réellement vierge. Celle-ci décide alors de se venger de ce viol avec l'aide de Bom et son groupe de musiciens, mais aussi celle de Luci, la femme masoschiste, mais abandonnée, du policier «qui la traite comme sa mère».

Yolanda, a cabaret singer, brings heroin to her lover who drops dead of an overdose. To escape from the police, the singer looks for refuge in a local convent. The Mother Superior, a fan of Yolanda, rapturously greets her. The mission of the order, called the Humiliated Redeemers (Redentoras humilladas), is to offer shelter and redemption to fallen women. The convent once was a bustling haven for prostitutes, drug addicts and murderers, but it is now in disrepair. The order is facing serious financial hardships as their prime financial supporter, the vain and greedy Marchioness (La Marquesa) has decided to discontinue the convent's annuity under the pretense of economizing. She feels less affinity with the sisters than did her recently deceased husband, who set up a fund in gratitude. The convent had taken in their wayward daughter, Virginia, who subsequently became a nun and ran off to Africa, only to be eaten by cannibals.

Diego Montes (Nacho Martínez) is a bullfighter, forced into early retirement by a goring, and in the opening scene he finds sexual gratification viewing videos of violent death. In retirement he teaches bullfighting, and among his students is Ángel, a diffident young man who suffers from vertigo. During one episode of vertigo in the practice ring, the scene cuts from Ángel to a woman killing a man during sex with a pin she was wearing in her hair, striking at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades, as a matador kills a bull. After class, Diego asks Ángel if he is homosexual, noting that he is not experienced with women. Ángel says he is not and vows to prove himself. Later that day, Ángel attempts to rape Eva (Eva Cobo), a model who is both his neighbour and Diego's girlfriend. As she is leaving him, she trips in the mud and gashes her cheek. At the sight of her blood, Ángel faints.

The film plot takes its starting point from the French play The Human Voice (La Voix humaine, 1930) by Jean Cocteau where a desperate woman tries to avoid being dumped by her lover through a series of phone calls. In the film TV actress Pepa Marcos (Carmen Maura) is depressed and taking sleeping pills because her boyfriend Iván (Fernando Guillén) has just left her. Both she and Iván work as voice-over actors who dub foreign films, notably Johnny Guitar with Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden. The voice he uses to sweet-talk her (and many other women) is the same one he uses in his work. He is about to leave on a trip and has asked Pepa to pack his things in a suitcase that he will pick up later.

Le film s'appuie sur le matériau fictionnel de Terre en transe (1967). On est encore dans une contrée imaginaire appelée l'Eldorado. Díaz II en est aussi le souverain. Mais, c'est un despote finissant. Le réalisateur dresse, en voix off, un rapide panorama de l'histoire du pays dans lequel sont allusivement évoquées les menées d'une mystérieuse "Compagnie d'Exploitation Internationale", dirigée par un milliardaire américain. Díaz n'a plus toute sa raison, et nous sommes en pleine apocalypse. Il perçoit la menace d'un soulèvement de ses anciennes victimes : les Indiens, les paysans pauvres... tandis qu'un berger/ange de la mort, faiseur de miracles et coupeur de têtes tout à la fois, fascine son imagination et terrorise sa conscience. Le monarque enlève alors une belle paysanne, symbole de pureté, et organise au château une cérémonie aux allures de funérailles. Mais, le berger tranche la tête du roi et libère la paysanne.
