Marie and Bruce is a 2004 drama film from Holedigger and New Films. It is directed by Tom Cairns and stars Julianne Moore and Matthew Broderick. It was based on the 1978 play of the same name by Wallace Shawn and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2004. Although the film was well received and starred many major motion picture stars, it failed to receive distribution and remained obscure, until it was released on DVD in March 2009. The music was done by Mark degli Antoni of the band Soul Coughing.

Synopsis

The film is based on the somewhat whimsical and somewhat comical relationship between a fairly unlikely couple involved in a complex and emotionally tortured cohabitation. The real scandal of the film begins when Marie decides to leave Bruce. Her lack of measured decisiveness in leaving, however, leads to the heaping on of verbal invective and a stream of sarcastic and pejorative language, assumed to have accumulated over the years. At the climactic dinner scene at a restaurant, Marie finally expresses her verbal contempt for Bruce but without much effect. The two return to their apartment and are seen falling asleep in their double bed as the film ends.

The film follows the concept of a play within a play, in this case a dreadful farce called Nothing On — the type of production in which many doors continually open and shut. The setting has been transplanted from English provincial theatre to Des Moines, Iowa, where a second-rate theatrical troupe is preparing to perform the Broadway-bound play under the direction of Lloyd Fellowes.

Following the flop of theatre musical "Funny Boy" (based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet) ("Opening Night"), the show's washed-up producer, Max Bialystock, hires the neurotic Leo Bloom as his accountant. While studying Max's books, Leo notes that, since a flop is expected to lose money, the IRS won't investigate the finances of failed productions. Leo then jests that, by selling an excess of shares and embezzling the funds, a flop could generate up to $2 million. Deciding to enact the plan, Max asks for Leo's help with the scheme, only for the latter to refuse ("We Can Do It").

In 1995 Hollywood, novice screenwriter Robert Sandrich has written an autobiographical script inspired by his lover's death by AIDS-related cerebral tuberculosis. It impresses both studio executive Jeffrey Tishop and his wife Elaine, but for commercial reasons Jeffrey is willing to greenlight the project only if Robert changes his protagonist from Maurice to Maggie and shifts the focus of his plot from gay to straight people. Robert initially refuses to compromise his principles, but when Jeffrey threatens to make the film without his participation, he decides to accept the $1 million paycheck he's been offered and make the requested edits.
