The film is based on the somewhat whimsical and somewhat comical relationship between a fairly unlikely couple involved in a complex and emotionally tortured cohabitation. The real scandal of the film begins when Marie decides to leave Bruce. Her lack of measured decisiveness in leaving, however, leads to the heaping on of verbal invective and a stream of sarcastic and pejorative language, assumed to have accumulated over the years. At the climactic dinner scene at a restaurant, Marie finally expresses her verbal contempt for Bruce but without much effect. The two return to their apartment and are seen falling asleep in their double bed as the film ends.

The film centers on the life of Jimmy O'Brien (Frank Whaley), a warehouse clerk by day and a standup comedian by night. He lives with his wife (Carla Gugino), daughter, and a disabled grandmother. Jimmy's aspiration to succeed contrasts sharply with the numbness of his pothead friend Ray (Ethan Hawke), who is just trying to get by. On Christmas Eve, 1989, aspiring filmmaker Mark Cohen, and his roommate, Roger Davis, learn that the rent previously waived by their former friend and landlord, Benjamin “Benny” Coffin III, is due. At the same time, their former roommate Tom Collins shows up and gets mugged in an alleyway. Meanwhile, Mark and Roger meet with Benny, who tells them he plans to evict the homeless from the nearby lot and build a cyber studio in its place.
