Add to a movie listEk Tha Raja (English: Once Upon A Time, There Was King) is a 1951 Tamil film directed by K. Ramnoth and starring M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and M. N. Nambiar. The screen play was written by A. S. A. Sami based on a Marie Corelli novel. This film cemented the onscreen image of MGR as a social rebel and fighter for justice. It was also made in Hindi (as Ek tha Raja) at the same time. It was the first Tamil film to receive an "A" (Adults Only) certificate from the film censor board.

Synopsis
A King's (Serukalathur Sama) mistress (Anjali Devi) usurps his power and casts him adrift in a river. The two princes of the kingdom (Sahasranamam and MGR) are denied their birthright. The deposed king wanders the country in the guise of a sage. The younger prince (MGR) leads a popular rebellion against the usurper-queen and restores the kingdom to his father.Actors

An ambitious minister (Nambiar) with designs to topple the puppet king (Pulimoottai Ramaswami) finds the popularity of the commander-in-chief (Nagaiah) and his favourite soldier (MGR) a stumbling block. He sends a young woman (Anjali Devi) to seduce the soldier, but she falls in love with him. After several twists and turns, the evil minister is exposed and felled in an exciting duel with the hero. The commander is chosen as the first president of the kingdom, now a republic!

Twins Sekhar and Anand (Master Sekhar) along with Mangalam (Pandari Bai), their mother witness their father (S. V. Ramadoss) being killed by escaped prisoner Nagappan (M. N. Nambiar), and are grief-stricken. This prompts the family to leave to Chennai in order to pursue a new life. But when Sekhar gets down from the train to fetch some water, it leaves without him. Nagappan arrives and kidnaps Sekhar, who is raised as a criminal, unaware that the same man killed his father.

Raja (M.G.R), a champion jockey leads a very happy and disciplined life. This story, passed on through centuries through traditional verse and folklore, dates back to the early 12th century during the reign of Kulothunga Chola I. The movie version of the story is this: Kambar, the kavichakravarthi whose name in enshrined forever as the author of Ramavatharam, the Tamil version of Ramayana, is a poet in Kulothunga’s court in Urayur. Dharmalingam (M.R. Radha), a rich landlord, is the father of two sons and a daughter. His eldest son has a love marriage with a poor teacher's daughter, Kamala. Dharmalingam disowns them.
