Sarvadhikari (Tamil: சர்வாதிகாரி) (English title: Dictator) is a Tamil language musical film starring M. G. Ramachandran and Anjali Devi in the lead roles and M. N. Nambiar as the villain. The film was released in 1951. It established Nambiar as a major star. It was the 25th film for MGR.
Synopsis
An ambitious minister (Nambiar) with designs to topple the puppet king (Pulimoottai Ramaswami) finds the popularity of the commander-in-chief (Nagaiah) and his favourite soldier (MGR) a stumbling block. He sends a young woman (Anjali Devi) to seduce the soldier, but she falls in love with him. After several twists and turns, the evil minister is exposed and felled in an exciting duel with the hero. The commander is chosen as the first president of the kingdom, now a republic!Actors

This story, passed on through centuries through traditional verse and folklore, dates back to the early 12th century during the reign of Kulothunga Chola I. The movie version of the story is this: Kambar, the kavichakravarthi whose name in enshrined forever as the author of Ramavatharam, the Tamil version of Ramayana, is a poet in Kulothunga’s court in Urayur. Maruthanaatu Ilavarasi is a well-woven story about a king (Veerappa) with two wives (one played by Saraswathi and the other does not appear in the movie!) and an evil-minded Minister (Chakrapani) whose sister is the younger queen. The two become pregnant and the evil genius persuades the king to believe that the senior queen had poisoned the junior queen out of sheer jealousy which the king tends to believe, but does not take any action. The frustrated Minister tries to eliminate the pregnant queen but she is saved by a courtier whom the Minister kills. The pregnant queen escapes many trials and gives birth to a son (MGR). He grows up and meets a young woman (Janaki) and her friend (Nagaratnam) and falls in love unaware that she is a princess. Their love grows and when he comes to know that she is a princess, he begins to distance himself from her. After many trials, the two come together and live happily.

Sharfunissa alias Nadira is a dancer in the Emperor’s court. She is bestowed the name Anarkali meaning pomegranate blossom, on account of her dazzling beauty. Prince Salim is smitten by her and they fall in love. Learning that his son has fallen for a lowly courtesan, Akbar is furious and warns them to stay away from each other. Howeverlove has never bowed to convention or authority. Events move to a tragic climax where Akbar sentences Anaarkali to death. She is entombed alive before Salim could reach her.

The film is based on an age-old Buddhist folktale connected with Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's son Kunal. The Mauryan prince Kunal was courted by Ashoka's younger queen Tishyarakshita and when he rejected her advances, was falsely accused by the queen of trying to seduce her and was thrown into prison and blinded. The story, however, comes to a happy end with his eyesight being restored by Lord Buddha and the king acquits of all the charges.
