Forever Mery (Italian: Mery per sempre), is a 1989 Italian drama film directed by Marco Risi and released in 1989. It stars Michele Placido, Claudio Amendola, Alessandro Di Sanzo, Francesco Benigno, Salvatore Termini and Tony Sperandeo.

Synopsis

Mery per sempre is set in Malaspina, a juvenile detention centre in Palermo, Sicily, during the 1980s. The protagonist, Marco Terzi (Michele Placido), is a teacher who has transferred to Palermo from Milan. He obtains a position as teacher inside the institution, and has great difficulty in establishing a rapport with the young, hostile students; in particular, Natale Sperandeo (Francesco Benigno), the leader of the group, who is inside for murder, and Pietro Giancone (Claudio Amendola). Terzi's situation is further complicated when Mario Libassi (Alessandro Di Sanzo), a transvestite prostitute, nicknamed Mery, falls in love with him. With the passing of time, however, Terzi slowly gains the respect and admiration of his students, even from the most hardened of the young men.

Boys on the Outside is the sequel to the 1989 drama film Forever Mery, and features most of the same characters. The film is largely set in ZEN, a bleak, economically deprived quarter on the northern outskirts of Palermo, Sicily, at the end of the 1980s. Its protagonist is Natale Sperandeo (played by Palermo-born actor Francesco Benigno), a young man who has just been released from Malaspina, a juvenile detention centre. Unable to find legitimate work, he takes up with his former gang, consisting of unemployed youths like himself, and perpetrates an armed robbery.

Arthur Rimbaud, gravement malade et aux derniers jours de sa vie, revoit les faits marquants de son existence. Son enfance dans les Ardennes, puis Paris où il devient la tête de proue des poètes symbolistes, sa rencontre avec Paul Verlaine avec lequel il entretient une relation amoureuse. Après avoir vagabondé ensemble, entre France, Angleterre et Belgique, la blessure infligée à Arthur par le coup de revolver de Verlaine met fin à leur relation et amène Arthur à renoncer à la poésie, doutant qu'elle puisse avoir un effet sur le monde comme il l'avait espéré. Ayant traîné ses semelles aux quatre vents durant une demi-décennie, il va ensuite arpenter pendant dix ans les déserts africains entre Arabie et Abyssinie, devenant agent commercial d'une importante compagnie française. Il se livre notamment au trafic d'armes avec le ras Ménélik et entretient une liaison amoureuse avec Gennet, une Éthiopienne qui restera à ses côtés jusqu'à ce que, atteint d'une tumeur maligne au genou droit, il doive quitter l'Afrique pour aller se faire soigner en France. C'est durant ses derniers mois qu'Arthur exprimera des sentiments insoupçonnés : son amour pour la vie et ses inclinaisons pour le surnaturel.

À Rome, à la sortie d’une boite de nuit, un adolescent trouve la mort dans un accident de voiture. Tout laisse à penser qu’il s’agit d’une simple collision, mais Corso, ancien flic devenu détective privé, est persuadé du contraire. Michelle, la mère du jeune homme et ancienne maîtresse de Corso, est à présent avec un homme de pouvoir, l’influent avocat Argento. Au cours de l’investigation s’ajoute la découverte du cadavre d’un ingénieur, apparemment proche de l’avocat. Corruption, écoutes téléphoniques, espionnage, règlements de compte : l’enquête va s’avérer difficile pour Corso, qui tente de faire éclater la vérité sur la mort du fils de Michelle.

The film opens with Peppino as a small child singing the popular song “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” with his brother in the back seat of a car on the way to a family gathering. The family is one of good standing in the social community and they are celebrating the fact that they have such a good life. In this scene the relationship between Peppino and his uncle Cesare is established. His uncle is a Don or Mafia boss in the small town of Cinisi where the story is set. In a scene soon after the happy family gathering we see don Cesare blown up by a car bomb which was planted by a rival Mafia boss. This ends Peppino’s time of innocence. Even as a small child he is thrust into the realities of life in the Mafia.

Kham is the last of a family line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand's war elephants. Traditionally, only the most perfect elephants could successfully defend the throne, and very great care was taken in raising them. Kham grows up forming close relations to his elephant, Por Yai and his calf, Kohrn. During Songkran festival, the elephants are stolen with help from Mr. Suthep, a local MP and his son who are collaborating with elephant poachers. Kham discovers that they are in the hands of Johnny, a Vietnamese gangster who runs a Thai restaurant named Tom Yum Goong Otob in Sydney, Australia.

Chas (James Fox) is a member of an East London gang led by Harry Flowers (Johnny Shannon); his speciality is intimidation through violence as he collects pay-offs for Flowers. He is very good at his job, and has a reputation for liking it. His sexual liaisons are casual and rough. When Flowers decides to take over a betting shop, owned by Joey Maddocks (Anthony Valentine), he forbids Chas to get involved, as he feels Chas's complicated personal history with Maddocks (which is at least partly gay) may lead to trouble. Chas is angry about this and later humiliates Maddocks, who retaliates by wrecking Chas's apartment and attacking Chas. Chas shoots him, packs a suitcase and runs from the scene.
