Synopsis
Jean Lavardin passe quelques jours paisibles parmi les curistes et les touristes de la petite station thermale de Montecatini. Pour briser cette appréciable tranquillité, un jeu télévisé doit prochainement se dérouler dans la petite ville. L'émission sera retransmise en direct. Dès lors, chacun y va de ses préparatifs pour accueillir l'événement. Mais, un assassin sévit sur la personne de Claire Anello, une romancière à succès. Or, cette femme de milliardaire n'est pas la seule cible du tueur. Le finaliste du jeu est, lui aussi, retrouvé mort. Lavardin, venu se refaire une santé, n'a plus guère l'occasion de prendre les eaux. Il commence son enquête sans tarder.Actors

Charles Masson (Bouquet), an advertising executive, is having an affair with Laura (Douking), the wife of his best friend, world-renowned architect François Tellier (Périer). Their sex life consists of sadomasochistic behavior, and in one of their heated sessions, Charles accidentally strangles Laura. Completely confused, Charles leaves the borrowed apartment in Paris and runs into François at a nearby bistro. The two drive back together to Versailles, where they have beautiful adjoining houses designed by François. Hélène Régnier's (Audran) mentally ill husband Charles (Drouot) injures their son Michel in a violent rage. Charles is then forced to move back in with his wealthy and manipulative parents, who use Hélène as a scapegoat for their son's mental state and decide to take over custody of Michel by any means necessary. While the boy is recovering in a local hospital, Hélène moves to a boarding house nearby. The Régniers hire Paul Thomas (Cassel), an impoverished family acquaintance, to find out something about Hélène which would help them in their custody battle. Paul moves into the boarding house and, with the help of his girlfriend Sonia (Rouvel), plots to ruin Hélène's reputation and then possibly kill her.
