Melody of a Great City (German:Großstadtmelodie) is a 1943 musical drama film directed by Wolfgang Liebeneiner and starring Hilde Krahl, Werner Hinz and Karl John. A young woman moves to Berlin to work as a press photographer.

Synopsis

Renate Heiberg vit à Wasserburg am Inn et rêve de devenir photographe. Un jour, un pilote italien fait un atterrissage d'urgence. Renate saisit la chance, elle fait des photos. Le correspondant Rolf Bergmann la met en contact avec un journal de Berlin qui lui achète ses photos. Elles paraissent en une, Renate gagne 600 reichsmarks. Encouragée, la jeune femme s'en va vivre à Berlin et essaie d'obtenir un emploi avec plusieurs journaux. Mais elle essuie des refus. Seul le Berolina-Press l'engage. Seulement la première commande de Renate est un échec ; à cause d'un malentendu, les photos d'une course cycliste arrivent trop tard à la rédaction et ne correspondent plus aux exigences de la rédaction. Renate est renvoyé, puis elle rencontre son collègue Klaus Nolte, qui a déjà une réputation. Il soutient Renate et lui trouve un appartement.

En 1910, un cirque itinérant s’arrête dans une petite ville. Le directeur a pour pseudonyme Sacha Obolski. The young Count Georg Wolkersheim (Willy Fritsch) is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie (Maria Holst), and their two chamberlains (Hans Moser and Theo Lingen), and when the four of them attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (Fred Liewehr). Georg quits the ball and returns to his lodgings to wait for his wife. Meanwhile, the two servants plot to further inflame Georg's jealousy by posing as Ludwig to commission a portrait of Melanie from the famous artist Moritz Daffinger (Egon von Jordan). The next day, however, Georg and Daffinger expose the servants' ruse, Ludwig reveals to Melanie that he has discovered her true identity, and all is forgiven.

After numerous fruitless negotiations with the Allies about the independence of Austria, the Austrian prime minister prompts his fellow countrymen to shred their four-language identity cards, which have been issued by the Allies, thus sending a clear signal to the world. Thereupon, Austria is charged for breaking the "world peace" at the fictitious "world court". The implicated message is clear: in the same manner as Austria was, in Austria's eyes, falsely indicted for breaking the world peace (1914 and 1939), they are now being indicted again in 2000.
